In a word, delightful. Chef Diego Caminos (formerly with Zelai) has branched out on his own and, along with his oenologist wife Esperanza and his sister Paula, has created La Brunilda, one of the best new tapas bars in town. On the chalkboard menu you will find an enticing selection of traditional tapas with a twist, without the pretention and high prices that have become the norm at many of the new “gastrobars”. A charming and cosy ambiance in a beautifully renovated 18th century house, with great attentive service and amazing food, including tapas-sized salads (why aren’t more people doing this?). Do yourself a favour and go!

As of November 2, 2010, El Burladero will have a new menu and will no longer have any connection to Dani Garcia
I first came across Dani García’s wonderfully innovative tapas at La Moraga in Málaga, and so I was delighted to discover that when Seville’s favourite “bullfighter’s retreat” hotel underwent extensive renovations it included a new tapas bar run by chef García. The look is much the same as his small & perfect Málaga location, but with a distinct toromaquia feel to it (burladeros are the wooden shields in the ring where bullfighters take shelter if pursued). The tapas are also similar, including the chic display of cold tapas, though my absolute favourite – the bulltail burger – was smaller and lacked the wonderful bulltail juice mayo I had enjoyed at La Moraga. Tapas are expensive, albeit delicious and beautifully presented, and the staff should be either friendlier or more efficient (preferably both), but the overall experience is quite a pleasant one.

Bad new!
Not necessarily. I didn't this this location was as good as La Moraga in Malaga. Perhaps they'll do something interesting with more typical Andalusian cuisine. I think they want to go back to more simple traditional cooking.

Exquisite tapas in chic modern setting
Now that Albarama has opened just a couple of doors down from my favourite wine bar Puracepa I’m going to have a hard time deciding which one to choose when I’m in the area. Luckily it won’t create a conflict of loyalty as both are owned by Juan Carlos García, and both will serve different “needs”. Chef Diego at Albarama has created an exquisite tapas list, and also has daily tapas specials depending on what’s fresh at the market that day. Have not yet tried the dining room situated in the back patio, but will let you know when I do.

El Gallinero de Sandra

Every very now and then someone says to me “have you ever been to…?” and I have never heard of the place they are raving about. Well, this happened to me yesterday. How could I not have known that El Gallinero de Sandra has existed for almost ten years?? And so of course I had to check it out.
Where to begin? Let’s start with the décor and ambience, which is charming and comfortable, with a whimsically-decorated dining room and a spacious outdoor terrace. The wine list is very well thought out and reasonably priced. And the food is wonderful. The dishes (no tapas served here) are ample so be aware that a plate for two to share may end up being enough for three. I was very impressed with everything my companion and I tried and cannot even say which dish I liked best because they were all exceptional in their own way. All I know is that I want to go back again real soon.

This tiny bar & kitchen produces some very fine seafood dishes at very reasonable prices. Although there is only room for a few stools inside the bar, there is an ample terrace and also a dining room across the plaza that seats about 40 people. The service is friendly and efficient, and there is a nice selection of wines by the glass. The zamboriñas and bacon-wrapped langostines were two of my favourites, but really, I thought everything I tried was exceptional.

The new Sur Bar & Tapas is finally open! I’ve been waiting for this since I heard they were planning a second location in the Metropol Parasol because I love the original place in Porvenir, but this one is a stone’s throw from my house and so much more convenient.
Tapas here are inventive and excellent quality, with a decent wine list and probably the coldest Cruzcampo you’ll find anywhere. Haven’t tried the raciones yet, but they sound very tempting indeed. The decor is modern and stylish with curving plate glass windows making up the exterior walls, which look out onto an attractive terrace. It’s early days yet but there are plans afoot for special menus to compliment their already wonderful selection of creative Andalusian dishes. Reservations accepted.

Offering “food & creativity”, I would say that Dr X does well on both counts. The bar itself has a very coolio ambience, but it’s also very cosy and welcoming. I like it. Tapas are listed on the blackboard and here we see some interesting and innovative stuff. The service is very friendly and helpful, though could be a bit quicker (if you care about that sort of thing). But the tapas are worth the wait and are served with a smile.

Yebra
After being told about this place by friends for ages I finally made it here for the first time last year (and have been back many times since). My friends were right - it's a wonderful place. Fabulous innovative food and very pleasant bar staff. A nice selection of wines. Favourites include the sea bass with prawns, clams & jamón serrano, grilled hake topped with langostines & baby eels, and pork tenderloin stewed in a sherry & pinenut sauce with cinnamon. Mmmmmmm...

Not to be confused with Modesto Tapas across the street (not recommended), the original Modesto can be quite touristy if you sit outside on the terrace. But inside at the bar it’s much more ‘local’, as well as cheaper. Favourite dishes include the “fritadura modesto” – a plate piled high with tempura style fried strips of onions, green & red peppers, topped with a handful of plump breaded prawns. Also be sure to try the breaded rosada with alioli.
But there is nothing you could order here that isn’t fabulous. Modesto has an excellent reputation for fish and seafood, and service at the bar is super efficient and friendly. I almost always find myself chatting away to other people eating at the bar, it’s just that kind of place. They also offer seasonal specialities, such as wild mushrooms and asparagus.

Three partners, three chefs and a menu imported from Besana Tapas combine with delectable design from award-winning Donaire Arquitectos to offer style and sustenance at newly-opened Pa Catar. The tapas are as visually pleasing as they are delicious, and there’s a super wine list with lots of by-the-glass options – para catar. A stone’s throw from Metropol Parasol, Pa Catar is sure to become one of my neighbourhood favourites. I love the corner spot at the bar in front of the floor to ceiling window, perfect for people watching.
