This is a fabulous neighbourhood bar just behind the bullring. Always busy, always serving wonderful food. The menu is small but it’s all high quality stuff, and the service is top-notch, fast and friendly.

Very recently opened (September 1st) I believe that Arenero is about to become a new neighbourhood favourite. And not just because it’s a stone’s throw from my house – the main reason I’ll keep coming back is that the food is wonderful, the service is welcoming and friendly and it’s a very comfortable space. You can sit at the tables next to the window, in front of the bar, in the back dining area or the indoor patio. And the tapas! Well, one curious thing you’ll notice is the wide range in prices, from 2.50€ to 4.80€, the latter being some of the most expensive tapas in town. But they are also some of the most inventive and interesting (and delicious!) tapas as well, and so you have the choice of splashing out a bit or having some of the more typical and lower-priced options. Great wine list, mostly featuring wines from Andalucía, and I am very happy to see my favourite white wine from Málaga, Botani, being served by the glass. Wine prices, by the way, are very reasonable, which should offset any extra you pay for the special “designer” tapas.

Brand new and looking good. I happened upon Diecinueve by chance while I was trying to find refuge from the feria goers in August … at first I thought it looked a bit pricey and “cold”, but once seated at the bar I got chatting to the staff and it turned out to be a great time. Great food too.

Recently opened (June 2010) this small and cheerful restaurant/bar located at the far end of the Alameda serves up some very innovative and tasty tapas at very reasonable prices. You’ll find a two large blackboard wall menus – one for tapas and raciones, the other for wines – with a changing market menu. Specialities include the vegetable tempura and parmentier de carrilladas, along with traditional dishes like a tender pulpo a la gallega and huevos rotos with black pudding and truffle. I can’t wait to go back!

the beer is good

I've been back to Matahambres a few times now - for the beer. A creamy San Miguel on tap that makes it worth visiting. Otherwise, the tapas are expensive for what you get. Nice location, but the food is not interesting.

My first visit to Mediterráneo was pleasant enough. At first the waitress seemed almost surly, but when I made an effort at small talk, commenting on the weather, she brightened up and became quite chatty. This location has changed hands a few times over the last 15 years – I think this time it could work. Directly across from the Bellas Artes University Building, Mediterráneo has a very nice terrace and downstairs bar area where tapas are served. Upstairs is a dining area for raciones which can also be booked for special events. The tapas are good enough. The more traditional dishes – a cool & refreshing salmorejo and lightly breaded crispy fried fish – were actually very good. The attempts at “innovation” were less successful: the presa with provolone was both fatty and chewy, and the nutty fried camembert was still rock solid inside. Also, a very poor wine list (at least for whites). But I would definitely go back for the fried fish. And I suspect it is a very popular place for university students.

In a word – fresh. Okay, two words – fresh and delicious. ConTenedor has a small chalkboard menu with 2-3 fixed dishes; the rest change daily depending on what looks good at the market that morning. Serving lunch and dinner (not tapas) in a bright and eclectically decorated space with an open kitchen showing off their daily market purchases. Can’t wait to go again…

Delikat Essences

Lo que han cerrado desde hace un año es la tienda de comida internacional de El Contenedor (estaba en C/ Laraña) pero el restaurante, que no tiene nada que ver con ellos más que en el nombre, sigue abierto. Les pregunté hace un mes o así que fuimás al restaurante por la coincidencia de nombres, y me dijeron que lamentablemente no lo habían protegido y fue duplicado, piensan que por una coincidencia sin mala intención

A typical neighbourhood bar with a distinct Semana Santa feel to it (a parihuela is the wooden platform that carries the statues during the Holy Week processions, which is then carried on the necks of the costaleros). Finding a typical neighbourhood bar in Barrio Santa Cruz is no longer as easy at it once was and so it is a pleasure to see a place where locals hang out and call their own. There are only three tables inside but the outdoor terrace is comfortable with tables on either side of the narrow (mostly pedestrian) street. Tapas are inexpensive and delicious, and the service is very friendly and attentive.
