The former site of Berliner Kindl’s brewing facilities, the massive brick building is home to artist studios, project spaces, performance halls and so much more.
At the epicenter of the rapidly expanding artist community of Neukölln, the brewery often hosts interesting events ranging from off-site Berliner Ensemble pieces to raucous weekend-long parties

Hufeisensiedlung

The Hufeisensiedlung (literally, Horseshoe) is an architectural development in the south-easterly area of Berlin-Britz. The project, which created 1,000 homes, was carried out by famed German architect Bruno Taut in 1925. In 1924 Taut was hired to direct GEHAG (a private real estate developer, who to this day use the horseshoe image as their trademark) in order to inject the city of Berlin with his signature Bauhaus modern designs.
The horseshoe shape created an encompassing spacial effect, which also allowed for a natural pond to hold center stage in the U. Taut’s designs were truly for the people—his motto, “light, air and sun,” played a key role in his work, which employed flat roofs (often controversially), green space and plenty of window space for the sun to shine through.
Once built, many city residents complained that the developments were too nice for the working class, and the working class were quite pleased. Over 80 years later, some original residents still remain and GEHAG continues to rent out the UNESCO site apartments

It’s hard not to notice the historic water reservoirs toppling over Prenzlauer Berg’s Kollwitzplatz, but few know that these structures have hosted summer-long programs of installations and performances from internationally renowned sound artists since 2007.
A focal point for Berlin’s vibrant sound-art scene, Singuhr often commissions new work specifically for the space. The underground chambers brandish an entirely unique architecture made more dramatic by the cold, murky atmosphere and uniformly bricked curvaceous walls. The overall effect is haunting and magical, especially as one wades through the tunnels followed by the cannoning sounds of their own footsteps

ÏMA Design Village is a design community utopia. Located in a massive brick building in the heart of Kreuzberg, ÏMA is the brainchild of Marina Ostrowski, a Russian-born brand specialist, and Eyal Burstein, an Israeli designer and one half of the collective, Beta Tank.
The two, with help from Burstein’s mother (the building’s owner and project namesake—”ïma” is Hebrew for mother), have built up an impressive multifaceted space. With usable space ranging from private offices to exhibition space, desk-shares to a concept store, artist studios to a coffee shop and 22 fully equipped loft apartments, for short and long stays, ÏMA truly feels like a small village.
With so many creative elements to manage, Burstein and Ostrowski are surprisingly relaxed—perhaps because the studios are nearly all rented and the apartments, fully booked—demonstrative of Burstein’s theory that the project is “future proof.
