Osho, born Chandra Mohan Jain (Hindi: चन्द्र मोहन जैन) (11 December 1931 – 19 January 1990), also known as Acharya Rajneesh from the 1960s onwards, as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh during the 1970s and 1980s and as Osho from 1989, was an Indian mystic, guru, and spiritual teacher who garnered an international following.
A professor of philosophy, he travelled throughout India in the 1960s as a public speaker. His outspoken criticism of socialism, Mahatma Gandhi and institutionalised religion made him controversial. He also advocated a more open attitude towards sexuality, a stance that earned him the sobriquet "sex guru" in the Indian and later international press.[3] In 1970, he settled for a while in Bombay. He began initiating disciples (known as neo-sannyasins) and took on the role of a spiritual teacher. In his discourses, he reinterpreted writings of religious traditions, mystics, and philosophers from around the world. Moving to Poona in 1974, he established an ashram that attracted increasing numbers of Westerners. The ashram offered therapies derived from the Human Potential Movement to its Western audience and made news in India and abroad, chiefly because of its permissive climate and Osho's provocative lectures. By the end of the 1970s, there were mounting tensions with the Indian government and the surrounding society.
In 1981, Osho relocated to the United States and his followers established an intentional community, later known as Rajneeshpuram, in the state of Oregon. Within a year the leadership of the commune became embroiled in a conflict with local residents, primarily over land use, which was marked by hostility on both sides. Osho's large collection of Rolls-Royce automobiles was also notorious. The Oregon commune collapsed in 1985 when Osho revealed that the commune leadership had committed a number of serious crimes, including a bioterror attack (food contamination) on the citizens of The Dalles.[4] Osho was arrested shortly afterwards and charged with immigration violations. He was deported from the United States in accordance with a plea bargain.[5][6][7] Twenty-one countries denied him entry, causing Osho to travel the world before returning to Poona, where he died in 1990. His ashram is today known as the Osho International Meditation Resort.
His syncretic teachings emphasise the importance of meditation, awareness, love, celebration, courage, creativity and humour—qualities that he viewed as being suppressed by adherence to static belief systems, religious tradition and socialisation. His teachings have had a notable impact on Western New Age thought,[8][9] and their popularity has increased markedly since his death.

The present office building of ATMA is a modern monument and a landmark in architectural history. The building is, at once, a symbol of the patronage and modernistic aspirations of the Ahmedabad textile community as well as a refined example of the work of its Swiss-French architect - Charles Eduoard Jeanneret(1887-1965), better known as Le Corbusier.
In 1951, Jawaharlal Nehru invited Corbusier to India to plan and design the city of Chandigarh. During this visit, Corbusier was invited to Ahmedabad by Chinubhai Chimanbhai, the erstwhile mayor of Ahmedabad. Surottam Hutheesing, the then president of AMOA, commissioned Corbusier to build the Association’s new headquarters. Corbusier was commissioned a total of five buildings in Ahmedabad, two institutions and three residences, of which one was not built. The Mill Owners’ Association Building, as it is known, was the first commission to be completed in 1954.
The building is located on Ashram Road, in the western part of the city, overlooking the river Sabarmati. A ceremonial ramp makes for a grand approach into a triple height entrance hall, open to the wind. Arrival is on the first floor, where (as per the original design) the executives’ offices and boardroom are located. The ground floor houses the work-spaces of the clerks and a separate, single-story canteen at the rear. On the third floor is a high, top-lit auditorium with a roof canopy and a curved, enclosing wall, in addition to a generous lobby. The east and west facades are in the form of sun breakers or brise-soleil, one of Corbusier’s many formal inventions, which, while avoiding harsh sun, permit visual connection and air movement. While the brise-soleil act as free facades made of rough shuttered concrete, the north and south sides, built in rough brickwork, are almost unbroken.
Corbusier was one of the main torchbearers of the Modern Movement. His concepts of an international style of architecture responsive to local climate and culture, and the honest expression of materials, were most subtly expressed in his India projects. In these works, Corbusier’s need for the “resolution of opposites” found its expression in “the juxtaposition of diverse and often seemingly contradictory architectural elements”. On the second floor of the Mill Owners’ Building, the lobby is treated as “an open space defined by harsh, angular forms and the auditorium as an enclosed space delineated by soft, curvilinear forms …two contradictory elements that both need the other in order to exist.”
In designing the office, Le Corbusier understood the essence of the Association, very well. Since 1891, AMOA had provided an institutional framework for the close family ties of the city’s largely Jain, textile mill owners. Corbusier expressed the institution’s dual character - the public and the private - through his concept of the house as a palace (Une maison - un palais). Villa Cook, designed by him in 1926 and based on this same concept, is considered to be the closest antecedent of the Mill Owners’ Building. Conversely, many of his later projects, most notably the Carpenter Centre for Visual Arts at Harvard, benefited tremendously from some of the experiments carried out in this particular building.
According to Corbusier, the expression of monumentality was one of modern architecture’s important tasks. The aim of this monumentality was to express the power of humans acting together and to celebrate the essential nobility of Man. In his own words: “A palace is a house endowed with dignity.” It was the textile industry which gave Ahmedabad its economic, and consequently, political importance, and in housing the business activities of the captains of the textile industry, the architecture of the Mill Owners’ Association Building is a tribute to this notion.
Of Ahmedabad and his association with the city, Corbusier had said: “With a full hand I have received, with a full hand I give.” Corbusier acknowledged the vision and aesthetic enlightenment of his clients, the mill owners of the city. It took courage and insight to engage the architect and his radical ideas, but in doing so, the mill owners demonstrated that modern architecture is a means to express a city’s aspirations.
The present administration of ATMA is sparing no effort to maintain Corbusier’s legacy to Ahmedabad. The building receives many visitors from all over the world. Besides showcasing its architectural contribution, ATMA is contemplating ways of opening up this unique building for a number of public activities. In this way, it can ‘give’ something back to the city from which it has received so much.

Siolim House is a 350 year old Palacio, now beautifully restored as a private seven room heritage boutique hotel in Goa. It is one of the best examples of the late 16th century 'casa do sobrado' style of Goa-Portuguese architecture in North Goa, and once was the home to the governor to Macau, and a family of administrators that included a governor to Macau and one to Mozambique. We are classified a 'Heritage Boutiqe Hotel' by the Dept of Tourism. We are situated in the quiet coastal village of Siolim, Goa which is perfectly placed for the lovely beaches just to the north of Morjim Ashwem and the action of the Candolim - Calangute - Baga - Anjuna stretch to the South. Situated close by is 'Little Siolim', a three room restored annexe villa to our boutique hotel in Goa that you can also rent as a villa.
Call us a boutique hotel, but we are more a home and unlike a hotel in every other way. We aim to expose guests to what Goa really is all about – an aromatic distillation of Indian and old European Portuguese cultures, through our family and home oriented approach to hospitality. Goa is not experienced in manicured lawns of a luxury hotel but rather from the close quarters of slow paced village and country life. It is about the deep unbroken traditions, amazing Goa heritage homes, delicious local cuisine based on a mix of indian spices and European influences. Finally it is about the friendliest people, and an open, tolerant and happy society. If you are looking for this, you may find it in and our heritage boutique hotel in Goa.
In 2001, Siolim House was a finalist for the UNESCO Heritage Prize, which considered its history and the work we did to restore this building. In 2009 we completed a second renovation to bring back more detail and more features than we character as a heritage Palacio, one of the rare and most beautiful examples still standing in North Goa. Our home staff are all very eager to show you their best and to offer our hospitality.
As a unique Heritage boutique hotel in Goa, we operate with a sensitive philosophy to our village, its culture and our surroundings. We are not over-ambitious about ratings or anything but we will try our best. One reviewer described us as 'lacking artificiality'. Others describe us as 'understated' and 'elegant'.

Off the beaten track, up in north Goa, are two stylish villas with views that soar downriver. On arrival you are ushered to the terrace with a sundowner: lap up the luxuriant scene. The views from the infinity pool are more breathtaking still. Later, meander downhill for a barbecue under the stars. The rooms each have a sit-out space overseeing the river or the islands. There are simple bright linens and rugs on dark stone floors, and walk-in showers. Look forward to long days lazing by two pools, serenaded by wildlife and spoiled by staff. Join in yoga on the terrace or plan a trip to the beaches. Leave by speedboat – James Bond-style. Bliss.
