Bringing together wit, wisdom and enough food and drink to see you through from early breakfast to a nightcap at last orders at the bar, The Book Club offers a cultural revolution to the East End’s social scene.

The Book Club fuses lively, creative events and late night drinking seven days a week with an alternative menu of brain-teasing and mind-expanding thought for food in the form of workshops, talks, cultural showcases, parties, ping pong, pool and the best in new music. The Book Club is the younger, slightly smarter sibling of the Queen of Hoxton, and has turned the conventional arts institution on its head, fusing boozing with brain power.

Two spacious floors of a former Victorian warehouse on Leonard Street have been kitted out for eating, drinking, thinking, meeting and dancing. The Book Club has a familiar, eclectic feel as varied as the clientele and the entertainment on offer. The interior blends the raw, pared-down character of the building with layers of mix and match vintage soft furnishings, naïve mosaics and graphic lighting features, as well as the constantly evolving permanent exhibitions that adorn the walls.

The Book Club presents an eclectic ongoing programme of events and social activities in art, music, film, fashion, philosophy, design, science, and the odd spot of craft. The line-up includes special screenings and cross platform club nights showcasing new creative talent through to informal evening classes and talks by a host of eclectic and interesting thinkers.

‘…one of Shoreditch’s best and quirkiest venues’ (Time Out, January 2011)

‘The Book Club can bring you from an early breakfast to a nightcap, from a cultural showcase to a spot of dancing and with its unforgettable charm and ability to satisfy nearly all urban needs. I think it’s safe to say that one visit won’t nearly be enough.’ (Weekend Notes, April 2011)

‘The Book Club, Shoreditch is a gem of a find.’ (Tuppence magazine, September 2011)

‘Food/Drink: 5/5.’ (London Larder)

This is really a space shared by two shops. It’s a fashion and accessories boutique offering pieces by Portuguese designers, but also a music, books, and magazine shop. On the boutique section you’ll find designer pieces using recycled materials, meaning everything you see is unique, special, and of a limited edition. As for the music shop, the books, DVD, and magazines you find next to the musical selections are also mostly music-related, much of it about electronic sounds.

Might just serve some of the needs of South Mumbai book lovers with its selection of English and Indian literature. Located on the ground floor of the 150-year-old Somaiya Bhavan, Kitab Khana is owned by Amrita and Samir Somaiya, who wanted a store where people would be encouraged to read and lounge about. “We want a space that will feel like a living room, where people can read a book and have a cup of coffee, a space that would lend itself to places in Europe or North America,” said Amrita Somaiya. “We want to offer Bombay one more shop to hang out at.”

Kitab Khana has plenty of reading nooks and seating areas, including a coffee shop that sells a range of pastries, cakes, tarts, salads and sandwiches. With its cast-iron columns, high ceilings and Italian marble statues, the store has already set itself apart from chains like Crossword and Oxford. Unlike the other two, Kitab Khana also sells a substantial selection of books in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati. The Somaiyas say that about 75 per cent of the stock comprises popular literature, so you can expect to find all the usual fiction and non-fiction biggies. The other 25 per cent is for philosophy and more “stimulating” fare, which includes shelves devoted to Gandhi, poetry, Indian texts like the Upanishads and Bhagvad Gita as well as science books and Penguin classics. There are also sections for children’s books (including a small play area), cook books, coffee table books and travel books, but Strand fans will discover that the selection is not much more varied than at that Fort stalwart. We did like the rack of international magazines, which was positioned next to a cosy seating area, as well as the charming character afforded by a heritage structure. But in terms of book selection, don’t go with high expectations. You’re better off cashing in on the discounted prices at Strand.
