lo mas bonito que he visto en ropa de niños

y mira que he visto sitios, pero esta tienda es sencillamente exquisita, con ropa japonesa para niños impresionante, algo cara, si, pero no hay nada asi en ningun sitio...

Little in Japan

You know those ultra-hip bars you only hit up when your fanciest friend is in town? The kiddie-shop equivalent is Trico Field, one of the latest SoHo hotspots for the small set.

Like some of the city's coolest clubs, the shop lacks clear signage and doesn't sit on a quaint block – the unmarked storefront is nested inconspicuously on West Houston. But the scene inside will impress even the mommy who has it all (though in turn, the prices are the equivalent of the $18 martini).

A Japanese company, Trico Field offers the edgy brands Fith, Denim Dungaree and Go to Hollywood, for boys and girls sizes newborn and up. The clothes have a cool-without-caring vibe: Layers upon layers of casual tees, tops, hoodies and jeans are well-made but worn-in, all infused with an Abercrombiesque adult aesthetic. Similarly, the displays are utilitarian-organic: rustic wooden tables and shelves, garments hung on lines using clothes pins, giant bundles of vintaged tees tied roughly with twine. And as with any "It" establishment, the staff is ample but not overly welcoming.

All in all, one can see why all the cool kids will come here. You may leave inspired but empty-handed. Though you'll be back – probably when you need a baby gift for that fancy friend from out of town.

Open Mon.-Sat., 11am-7pm, 65 West Houston St. (bet. West Broadway & Wooster),

bombay electric

Bombay Electric is a distinctly Indian platform for fashion and design. Located in the bustling heart of Mumbai, the heritage space mirrors the electric energy of the city and represents the most promising talent of India's creative explosion. Since being "the first concept store to hit India", and named as "the city's most cutting edge designer boutique", Bombay Electric has grown into a beacon of experience and a landmark for progressive design in India.

Another Magazine speaks of Bombay Electric as "Mumbai's answer to Colette", and the New York Times has described Bombay Electric as "the Barneys of Mumbai". On her recent visit to India, Suzy Menkes of the IHT wrote "Bombay Electric, the cutting-edge store in Mumbai, could be a template for the next millennium of Indian style".

Bombay Electric features the best of established Indian designers such as Manish Arora and Rajesh Pratap Singh, and is known as the first to spot and nurture rising Indian talent. The cherry picked fashion collection shares the space with a curated selection of international design brands, such as Comme des Garcons and United Nude, rare gems, antique tribal jewelry, hand woven scarves, cashmere, limited edition & vintage pieces.

Bombay Electric regularly holds photography exhibitions, concerts, and launch parties in its palm tree lined outdoor courtyard. Talvin Singh recently played to a packed house and Elizabeth Hurley chose Bombay Electric to launch her beach wear in India. The progressive clientele of architects, musicians and artists allow Bombay Electric to be a living, breathing, changing organism. Many Bollywood stars, directors and producers, including Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan, Gauri Khan, Lara Dutta and Rani Mukherjee also visit regularly to find daywear, a carpet dress and anything in between.

Opposite the five star Taj Mahal Palace and Towers and Gateway of India on "the Bond Street of Mumbai", and yet a stone throw away from a busy vegetable market and street food stalls, Bombay Electric is housed in a historic heritage building. A restoration and redesign project exposed 'antique futuristic' interiors featuring original tree-sized teak beams, a present from the King of Burma, coupled with sculptural white racks and industrial aluminum trunks.

Killer kitsch & super cool finds

RePop combines the overcrowded charm of an old-fashioned Parisian boutique with the promising clutter of a midwestern junk shop. It has both range (dolls’ heads, antique chemical bottles, taxidermy, ball gowns, mid-century-modern furnishings) and value. You might find a twentieth-century Danish lounge chair for under $300 or that human spine you’ve been looking for to round out your creepy-things collection. All the merchandise has been vetted for interest, so you’re spared picking through the bottom of boxes, and there are even artful window displays. On the first Friday of every month, there are art exhibitions by talented customers or Pratt students who live nearby

nor black nor white

“Exploring India through textile and art”, says Amrit Kumar and Mriga Kapadiya’s website. The Canadian-born designers have made Mumbai their home and Gujarat their playground, which plays a starring role in their first collection. Nor Black Nor White’s range is an abbreviated affair, a capsule collection of just 18 pieces that incorporate traditional Kutchi bandhini (tie-dye) work and embroidery techniques on sexy, oversize boyfriend shirts, easy-to-wear separates and short dresses.

Kumar and Kapadiya grew up in Toronto, but moved to Mumbai a couple of years ago. The line might never have come into being if they hadn’t decided to travel to Kutch, where they encountered Kala Raksha, an organisation that works toward preserving traditional Gujarati art and embroidery techniques. What’s the significance of the brand name? It’s because it’s “a grey space,” the designers said. “Part anthropology, part fashion. Not this nor that.”

Every piece in the collection is thoroughly modern, thanks to their uncomplicated cuts. We’ve got our eyes on a slippery silk shirt in bright orange with oversize bandhini diamonds, and a boldly-patterned indigo and yellow dress that loosely skims the body. But we wouldn’t say no to their twist-back camisoles or super-wide khadi trousers either. It’s an effortless capsule wardrobe and we want it all. Vandana Verma

ask for HANSA

his 30-year-old store has some serious value for money clothing. Expect kurtas with Rajasthani mirrorwork, tops with traditional prints cut in very modern styles and gorgeous Maheshwari cotton stoles and dupattas.

B3 Matru Ashish, First Floor
39 Nepean Sea Road
Mon-Sat 10am-7pm.

For many of us, ethnic chic begins (and ends) with Fabindia and Anokhi. They started off making salwar kameezes hip for a generation that didn’t look beyond Weekender and re-introduced shoppers to the colourful vegetable dyes of Jaipur cottons and Gujarat’s intricate motifs. They’ve made ethnic clothes appealingly contemporary and practical too.

However, most of us have forgotten that before Fabindia, we had handloom houses and the Central Cottage Industry. The first renaissance of traditional Indian clothing occurred in the early 1950s. The feisty freedom fighter Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay is responsible for preventing traditional arts and crafts from becoming endangered by setting up emporia selling ethnic goods all over the country.

As a student of St Xavier’s College in the mid-1980s, textile anthropologist Monisha Ahmed recalls shopping at khadi emporiums, handloom showrooms and the odd Dastkar exhibition even though most people at that time got their clothes tailored. The shops mostly sold “textured fabrics” and handloom material. “Sometimes if I wanted floral [prints], I would go to a Rajasthani emporium,” Ahmed said. “Ready-made [clothes] shops revolutionised street clothing.”

Fabindia was a boon to theatre actor Suruchi Aulakh, our model for this look. As a student at Rishi Valley, a boarding school in Andhra Pradesh, she was only allowed a limited number of clothes; most of them came from Fabindia’s first outlet, in Delhi. The school’s restrictions and its “stress on Indian clothes” helped her develop her sense of style as she had to inventively mix and match a few items of clothing. Her years at Rishi Valley have been valuable training. Aulakh can often be found at Prithvi Theatre floating about in exquisite crushed skirts and bright salwar kameezes. They didn’t cost much either. Here’s our pick of Mumbai’s reasonably-priced ethnic wear stores.

Cottons
The designers at Cottons know how to have to fun with ethnic prints. They might be over-fond of attaching beads to hems and collars, but on the whole their clothes are cheery and inventive. Stock up on racerback kurtis and colourful Patiala salwars.
Alexandra, St Sebastian Road, Bandra (W) (2651-8408). Daily 11am-7.45pm. Kurtis Rs 350 onwards, kurtas and patiala salwars Rs 450 onwards.

Cotton Cottage
One of the more unimaginative Fabindia clones, Cotton Cottage stocks standard block-printed ethnic wear. However searching through shelves of rather prosaic clothes, one often finds hidden gems. In addition, Cotton Cottage can’t be beaten for price.
121 Agra Building, MG Road, opposite Mumbai University, Kala Ghoda (2267-4026). Also at 16 Sunny Side, CHS Lokhandwala (2639-8663). Daily 10am-8.30pm. Kurtas Rs 340 onwards.

Creative Handicrafts
This tiny store on Hill Road is run by Creative Handicrafts, an NGO that supports underprivileged women by training them to make clothes. There’s not a lot of choice on offer: kurtas are limited to solid colour affairs with embroidered Warli figures dancing around the yoke and tops are fairly ordinary.
Shop No 1, Bandra Homeland Co-operative Housing Society, next to Abro, Hill Road, Bandra (W) (6572-7015). Mon-Sat 11am-8pm. Kurtas, skirts Rs 275.

Matrix
Shopping at Matrix can be an intimidating experience. Salespeople far outnumbered customers the day we visited, as a result of which all their attention was turned on us. The pressure to make a purchase was intense. However the store is a must-see as it offers a vast array of high-quality salwar kameez sets, many of them moderately priced under
Rs 1,000.
27 Hill Road, opposite Globus, Bandra (W) (2645-3377). Daily 10am-10p

Odin curates its labels to maintain a careful mix of the known (Rag & Bone, Trovata) and the get-them-before-they’re-big (currently, Engineered Garments and You Must Create). New merchandise rolls in constantly, not just seasonally, and although the shop leans toward casual separates (Rogues Gallery sweatshirts, Cheap Monday skinny jeans), you can remake an entire wardrobe right on up through a slim-cut Oliver Spencer suit. It’s not all expensive, either; polos start at $39. There are also accessories like Comme des Garçons wallets, Y-3 and Common Projects sneakers, belts, ties, jewelry, even grooming products and objects like clocks and cameras.
