Great bar-restaurant run by a friend's brother!

This bar-restaurant is located in the outskirts of Tokyo, in a small city called Tachikwa. Tucked inside this less known zone of Tokyo is a cozy little place decked out with surf boards and MY logo design!

The food is fantastic, it's a mixture of Japanese and western styles, sort of like what they call 'creative dinning'. They also make their own desserts and these are also a great treat!

While the place may be small, it has a wonderful ambience and you can sit and eat while you chat with a friend or two for hours on end without feeling the need to leave. The staff is also very very friendly (the proprietor being also my friend's brother!)

It is a bit out of the way for visitors of Tokyo, but if you are looking for a little adventure outside of the typical neon lights and crowds of centre Tokyo and want a bit of authentic Tokyo life in areas where the average Japanese live, come out on the Chuo Line and visit some of the main stops (Kichijoji, Kunitachi) before stopping at Tachikawa, now a major terminal. Or, if you visit the Okutama area for a hike or hot spring, why not enjoy a relaxing dinner here after returning from the mountains.

There are plenty of other restaurants and bars around the area, but Byron Kitchen is located in a very quiet zone and you can definitely enjoy a relaxing night here.

Nice Japanese inn in the heart of Kyoto

I was planning a last-minute trip to Kyoto with friends and stumbled upon this 'ryokan (Japanese inn)'. The people were very friendly and the inn itself is comfortble. It's small but has a nice garden and reception hall. Our room was not the best room they could offer us, as it was peak season and we were lucky they even gave us a room at all! The inn is located in a quiet neighbourhood not far from busy Kyoto - minutes of walk to the Teramachi shopping mall, which is next to the popular Sanjo and Shijo Kawaramachi areas, not far from the Higashiyama area where you find Gion, Pontocho and famous temples and shrines like Kiyomizu Temple and Yasaka Shrine. We didn't have breakfast or dinner there at the inn, but from what we saw it was good (mind you, ryokan's can be expensive). If you want a nice Japanese style accommodation while in Kyoto and one not too far from all the actions in town, then this might be your choice of stay.

(Check out pictures on their webpage to get an idea.)

Wonderful Paper Shop....

Kamakura Yohira is part of the Yohira chain, and is situated not far from the Daibutsu (big buddha).

The shop is renovated from a traditional Japnaese house and has a very relaxing and nostalgic atmosphere.

A gallery of wonderful washi, or Japanese paper, in various sizes, colours, designs are on display and for sale. You will find great souvenirs here, be it for wrapping presents, writting your greetings to family and friends back at home, origami, or other purposes, you will find something satisfying to your taste here.

Supermaket for sourvenirs...

Located in the middle of Omotesando in Harajuku area, it is both convenient and excellent for last minute souvenir shopping.

(Below is quoted from a web guide):

Possibly the most famous of souvenir shops, Oriental Bazaar is also the most imaginatively laid out. There are four floors and the higher you go, the more expensive the items get. The basement stocks bright, cheap and cheerful, touristy items, while the top floor offers antiques and traditional Japanese kimono and crafts. It is notably one of the best places to buy affordable and beautiful, second-hand original kimonos. Yukata (bathrobes), ceramics, towels and papercraft are some of the more popular items.

Macau in the middle of Shibuya!

Paradise Macau is a really great cafe/restaurant all decked out to make you feel like you are somewhere in the southeast Asia.

The place is in a quieter district by the busy centre of Shibuya, just a step away from the end of the 'Sentagai'.

If you find yourself lost in the Shibuya crowd and feel like a retreat away from all the lights and noise but still want to be part of the Shibuya scene, then this might be a nice stopover for a break.

The place is surprisingly spacious and relaxing and the food is excellent!

Cafe Canal is a fantastic place for meeting friends and having a relaxing drink right in the heart of Tokyo. Those of you who may find yourself in the vicinity of Yotsuya, Ichigaya, Iidabashi, or Ochanomizu in Tokyo should definitely go to this cafe to relax.

It has a waterfront stryle terrace and restaurant, and very close to JR and subway stations. It is situated right by one of the formal moats that made up the Edo city, and looks out to JR Chuo Line, which, when you are there at night, presents an interesting view of brightly-lit trains speeding past.

In a busy and crowded city like Tokyo, a place like Canal Cafe is hard to come by and you will definitely enjoy the retreat from your busy sightseeing schedule.
