Naerum Allotment Gardens by Carl Theodor Sorensen, Denmark, 1952

Nærum, Denmark, are considered one of C. Th. Sørensen 's most important creations. In 1948 40 oval allotment gardens, each measuring c.25 × 15 m/80 × 50 ft, were laid out on a rolling lawn, a common green, in a fluid progression. The gardens are mostly placed so that the oval lies across the curves of the slope. This use of the rolling terrain, combined with the sweeps and curves of the hedges, accentuates the dynamic impression. The individual garden plots are enclosed compartments surrounded by hedges; their cottages may be situated in different ways, but comply with the overall plan. The hedges were originally intended to be both clipped and unclipped, using such species as hornbeam, hawthorn, privet, and roses, but today there are mostly privet and hawthorn, clipped in different heights and forms. The design of the individual garden plots was left up to each owner, but a guide from C. Th. Sørensen shows various models. The allotment gardens are situated close to a large public housing scheme, Nærumvænge, with flats and terraced houses, characterized by its homogeneous look and red hipped roofs. C. Th. Sørensen landscaped the green spaces here also.

FACTS
LIGHT AND SPACIOUS
BY VIBEKE ANDERSSON MØLLER (16 STORIES)
In 1943, architect Viggo Møller-Jensen built some homes with studios known as Atelierhusene especially designed for artists. The client was a social housing association called Foreningen Socialt Boligbyggeri. The houses comprise three rows of two-storey terraced houses that flank two sides of a small lake near Utterslev Lake. Two rows are for families of artists whereas the third is intended for younger, mainly single artists. There are 21 houses altogether and each has a 35-square-metre artist's studio. Though brick-built, the houses feature facades that vary between thin plaster and boarding. The roofs are made of corrugated fibre cement. The communal garden was designed by landscape gardener C.Th. Sørensen.

Louisiana is not merely an experience in modern and contemporary art, but a congenial reflection of the interplay between art, architecture and landscape. Situated in Denmark on the North Zealand coast in a spacious, old park with a fine view across the sound of Sweden. The park serves as an ideal setting for displaying the museum’s collection of modern sculptures. Similarly the prominent museum buildings, constructed between 1958 and 1998, offer a fascinating background for the permanent collection of 20th century art. It houses an exquisite collection by international artists such as Arp, Francis Bacon, Calder, Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Sam Francis, Giacometti, Henry Moore, Picasso, Rauschenberg and Warhol. Architectonically, the new wings are still in harmony with the first Louisiana. But the architects have naturally changed their ideas during the many years that have passed since 1956. New stylistic elements have been introduced here and there, but the continuity has been retained.

The new Kastrup Søbad seawater swimming area is a leisure amenity out of the ordinary. Like a conch, the sea bath emerges from the water to occupy a central position along the beach looking over the Øresund Sound. Just as we have seen further to the north at Amager Strand Beach, Kastrup Strand Beach has undergone major transformation and reorganization. The facilities include the main building on the water, a new bathing beach and a new service building onshore that includes toilet facilities, as well as green spaces inland.

A pool for the masses
Kastrup Søbad has been executed using the highest-quality materials and stands apart as an architectural work based on both beauty and functionality. The structure consists of a 100-metre-long bridge leading from the newly built beach to a circular wooden platform. The swimming area's circular shape and exterior screen have the distinct advantage of protecting bathers from the wind. The structure is built of azobe, a tropical wood resistant to salt water. For White Arkitekter, it was important to make the sea bath accessible to the masses all day long. Disabled-friendly features have been incorporated, and the lighting has been apportioned equal weight with the architecture. The design has made use of indirect light and light recessed into the wooden decking. As a result, Kastrup Søbad offers both a functional setting for swimmers and a sculptural sight for those taking an evening stroll.
