The learning centre for the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), in Switzerland, is a new kind of building. The whole structure, which in itself is like a small campus, is a one-storey slab undulating into hills and valleys and perforated with open-air atriums. What is absolutely radical about it is the way that the different zones are all completely open across this landscape, divided not by walls but by topographical horizons. “You can feel a very huge space but you cannot see the whole area,” explains Sejima, referring to how the floor rises up to cut off the view. Like the museum in Kanazawa, the EPFL building can be entered from a number of approaches, and the routes through it are free-form rather than channelled.

EPFL takes the practice’s preoccupation with fluidity and transparency to its logical limits. Again, this sense of openness is a Japanese quality taken to extremes, one that, Sejima explains, derives from the tatami floor mat: “We have some tendency to feel space – even if there is no wall we have floor mats and so there is some space between you and me. In Europe, the space [is] made by the wall and by the chairs but the Japanese just put the mat.”

EPFL is like one large mat, but it is also the most literal expression yet of SANAA’s inclination to describe its buildings as “parks”. “We can expect many people to stay together and at the same time find some personal space by themselves,” says Sejima, echoing Nishizawa’s description of the park, “anybody can join, anybody can stay.”

AMO OMA

The new Seattle Public Library houses the library's main collection of books, government publications, periodicals, audio visual materials and the technology to access and distribute information from the physical collection online.
The building is divided into eight horizontal layers, each varying in size to fit its function. A structural steel and glass skin unifies the multifaceted form and defines the public spaces in-between.
Situated on a sloping site between 4th and 5th street the new library will have entrances on both street levels.
The entrance level on 4th Street, one of Seattle's main thoroughfares, houses the Children's Library and foreign-language resources.
Rows of escalators lead to the 5th Street "Living Room" lobby located under a 50-foot-high sloping glass wall. The lobby can also be reached directly from a covered walkway than runs the length of the 5th Avenue facade.

The carpeted "Living Room" contains the fiction stacks while non-fiction are located on the "Dewey Ramp"; a four-story ramp that allows people to browse through books in a continuos sequence.
The Reading room, on the top floor, has views of Puget Sound and the surrounding mountains.

Koolhaas sees the new library as a custodian of the book, a showcase for new information, a place for thought, discussion and reflection - a dynamic presence.
The fact that the contents of a whole library can be stored on a single chip, or the fact that a single library can now store the digital content of all libraries, together represent potential rethinking: new forms of storage enable the space dedicated to real books to be contained; new forms of reading enhance the aura of the real book.
Our first operation has been the "combining" and consolidation of the apparently ungovernable proliferation of programs and media. By combining like with like, we have identified five platforms, each a programmatic cluster that is architecturally defined and equipped for maximum, dedicated performance. Because each platform is designed for a unique purpose, they are different in size, density, opacity.
The in-between spaces are like trading floors where librarians inform and stimulate, where the interface between the different platforms is organized - spaces for work, interaction, and play. (And reading).

Memorias del proyecto:
Terreno existente en fuerte ladera; muros de contención escalonados de hormigón en masa. Diferencia de cotas entre calle de fachada y patio superior, 12 metros. Orientación, Mediodía. Accesos, inferior desde la calle y superior desde el patio. Sótano destinado a vestuarios del gimnasio y campo de entrenamiento de hockey sobre patines; planta baja, a cancha de juegos y cuarto de profesores de gimnasia. Entreplantas primera y segunda, congregaciones, antiguos alumnos y psicotecnia. Planta alta destinada a Museos de Ciencias Naturales, Física, salas de conferencias, de juegos, de Música, lectura, etc. Patio superior para juegos al aire libre, continuación del más reducido, ya existente.
Tema dominante: gimnasio cubierto.
Estructura de hormigón en sótanos, de hierro el resto. En la sala, pilares de ocho metros de altura separados a seis metros, soportando vigas-puente de 20 metros de luz. Forjados de viguetas metálicas y Viroterm, absorbente de ruidos, en la línea baja de las vigas, utilizado conjuntamente como piso de las plantas superiores y techo del gimnasio. Suelo elástico de madera en cancha. Se trató de conseguir un ambiente cargado de humanidad, neutralizador de la frialdad gimnástica; se usaron materiales calientes en color y materia; fue ésta la principal preocupación arquitectónica ambiental.

Este edificio del año 62 nació a su aire. Preocupados con los problemas urbanos, aprovechamiento del mal solar, económicos, no dio margen para preocuparse por una arquitectura determinada; por eso carece de cualquiera de ellas. Tal vez sea otra; tal vez. Explicarlo llevaría a la polémica de: Arquitectura sí, Arquitectura no. Situado el volumen del gimnasio propiamente dicho en la cota justa, se añaden por el arquitecto al programa el sótano, las clases (cubierta del gimnasio) y la terraza (patio de juegos) en la cota del Colegio. Con la elección de la estructura apropiada se consiguen, en el interior del gimnasio y las clases, efectos arquitectónicos.
Los miradores exteriores le devuelven al gran muro la escala urbana. Se remata todo con la valla de protección del patio, que juega con el conjunto y también es fachada.
El gimnasio de Maravillas tiene ya 22 años. No sé por qué lo hice así pero lo que sí sé es que no me disgusta haberlo hecho. Creo que el no hacer Arquitectura es un camino para hacerla y todos cuantos no la hagamos habremos hecho más por ella que los que, aprendida, la siguen haciendo. Entonces se resolvió un problema y sigue funcionando y me parece que nadie echa en falta la Arquitectura que no tiene.

Design description:
Existing ground with a strong slope; stepped in situ concrete retaining walls. The difference in heights between the street of the main façade and the upper yard is of 12 m. Exposure, midday. Accesses, lower from the street and upper from the yard. Basement used as the gymnasium changing rooms and roller skate training ground; ground floor as games yard and trainers room. First and second floor, congregations, former students and psychotechnology. Upper floor assigned to Natural sciences museum, physics and lecture, games, music and reading rooms.Upper yard to open air games, extension of the more reduced existing one. Predominant subject: covered gymnasium.

Concrete structure in basements. Rest of the structure in steel. In the hall, 8 m height columns, separated 6 m, supporting bridge beams spanning 20 m. Slab of small steel beamns and Virotem, noise absorbent, on the lower line of the beams, used at the same time as floor of the upper floors and ceiling of the gymnasium. Elastic wood floor on the court. The intent was to get an atmosphere full of humanity, neutralizer of the gymnastic coldness; warm materials in colour and substance; this was the main architectural environmental concern.

This building was born this way. Worried about urban concerns, development of the bad building site, economics, there was no margin allowed to be worried about a specific architecture; that's why it lacks of any of them. Maybe it is another one; maybe. Explaining it will carry to the polemic: Architecture yes, Architecture no. Having placed the volume of the gymnasium itself at the proper height, the basement, the classrooms (ceiling of the gymnasium) and the terraze (games yard) at the height of the School are added to the program by the architect. Architectonic effects at the interior of the gymnasium and classrooms are achieved by this choosing of the proper structure.
The outdoor miradors return the urban scale to the large wall. The protection fence capps off the whole, being façade at the same time.
The Maravillas Gymnasium is already 22 years old. I don't know why I did it so, but what I do know is that I don't dislike having done it. I believe that not making Architecture is a way to make it, and that all of us

The LO-School is located in peaceful surroundings near Hamlet's castle of Kronborg, 45 kilometres north of Copenhagen. The conference centre is beautifully situated in a park by the sea. It was originally designed by Danish architects Jarl Heger and Ebbe and Karen Clemmensen in 1969. The same architects have carried out all later reconstruction so that the design of the whole institution, from the general concept, the ceilings of large rooms and down to details such as chairs and lamps, has the same mark of quality and taste. The conference centre has one of Denmark's finest collections of modern Danish art.

El Instituto de Arquitectura Avanzada de Catalunya es un centro internacional de educación, investigación y desarrollo orientado a la arquitectura entendida como una disciplina que involucra diferentes escalas de análisis territorial y desarrollo urbano así como diversos proyectos arquitectónicos, realizaciones digitales y entornos informativos.

Localizado en Barcelona, una de las capitales internacionales del Urbanismo, la institución dirigida por Vicente Guallart desarrolla programas multidisciplinares que exploran fenómenos urbanos y territoriales internacionales poniendo especial acento en las oportunidades que surgen de los territorios emergentes y en los valores culturales, económicos y sociales que la arquitectura puede aportar a la sociedad.

El IAAC desarrolla el Master en Arquitectura Avanzada, dirigido por Vicente Guallart, Willy Müller y Marta Male-Alemany en directa colaboración con la Fundación Politécnica de Catalunya.

Paralelo a los programas educativos el IAAC desarrolla un programa de investigaciones en colaboración con expertos de otras areas, arquitectos invitados, investigadores y participantes de los programase ducativos.

Algunos de los proyectos recientes mas importantes son el Media House Proyect, elaborado junto al Media Lab del MIT, el proyecto de investigación territorial Hipercatalunya presentado en el Macba de Barcelona y el Diccionario de Arquitectura Avanzada de Metapolis.

This school is divided into two main parts; a public area (coffee area, lecture rooms, etc.) and the private area (classrooms, administration area), which are connected by a common entrance, that can also be used separately. The café opens to the yard and a 'park'. The teachers´room can be connected to this café. For functional and acoustical reasons, the classrooms are separated from the administration area on different floors. The administrative area is situated on the ground floor, with areas for information and public relations found close to the main entrance. The classrooms are on the first and second floor, in front of them there is a waiting zone 'between' the trees. A construction of a series of ramps and different staircases leads from the entrance hall to the auditorium on the first floor.This link from the entrance to the second floor allows for a ceromonious procession for guests and serves as the backdrop for public addresses.
