El Estragón Vegetariano

This remains a perennial favourite among La Latina’s many tapas bars and eateries. Ideally located in Madrid’s oldest square and distributed over three levels (cutting down on the noise and making the place feel more cosy), they’ve gained a solid reputation for healthy, innovative cooking.
Veggie Food
Located steps from the Plaza Mayor, it promotes “high vegetarian kitchen”, but don’t let the translation scare you: the food is fresh and visually appealing. It’s strong on salads, and its menú del día (€10) won’t leave you hungry an hour later.

Cheap eats
Among the many affordable spots in Argüelles, La Cervecería de San Julián is a good choice, with a great mix of students from ICADE and the Complutense, as well as older locals stopping in for their daily slice of tortilla.
Tortilla Tortilla!
Set on the hill between Sol and Plaza Santa Ana, La Tía Cebolla serves fantastic tortilla española (€4) and generous slabs of homemade empanada (tuna- or mincemeat-filled pie) for just €2.50. Plus, the friendly waiters bring fresh bread, chorizo and cheese free with each drink.
Mmm free food
If you can elbow your way through the crowds to the bar, you’ll find beer or cider for €1.50, immediately followed by a plate of hot tapas: croquettes, patatas bravas and tostadas galore. Amazingly, the bar staff never repeat the dishes that accompany each round.
