Just near Plaza España is a cool music venue where you might catch some of your favorite international acts.In a past life this was a theatre. The sound can be touch and go, and the brand-themed décor a bit nauseating but it’s still a good venue. Recent headliners include Juliette Lewis and Nada Surf.

Sala Stella
Still one of the best nights out in Madrid this one, even after six years of existence. The club is sleek and modern, the crowd friendly and up for it, and the music a mix of techno and electro-house. Unmissable.

Something of a Madrid institution, this one. Opening its doors at 10am every Sunday, Space gets more faithful devotees through the door than the local church. Expect plenty of dancefloor madness at this all-day house session, full of those who got up especially for a day in a club, and those who are still going from the night before.

Curiously named after those nodding dogs you find in the back windows of cars, this bar has a loyal following who pack out the dance floor, while owner-cum-dj bangs out a mix of rock, soul, dub, funk and hip hop.

This Club Rocks
Costello is great on Thursdays, try the upstairs lounge part for a chiller atmosphere and pretty people watching. Drinks aren't too expensive, and the music is good without being too loud. Downstairs, however, is another story. You feel a bit trapped in the dark, cavelike club, but get a few drinks in you and you'll be fine. The music is great: Britpop that gets even the shyest dancing. Check the website for live shows, it's a great place to see up-and-coming indie bands.

Babú, drinks and more
Here’s a novel idea: a bartender who serves you drinks based on your mood. Well, that’s the basic plan, anyway. And if that fails, there’s a cocktail list of more than 35 different drinks. Plus, with all those ingredients on hand, they can create a special drink just for you. Babú just opened its doors last month, and with all the cool details in the décor – a brilliant red bar, blue accents, black-and-white photographs and groovy lamps designed by Phillipe Starck – it’s the perfect place to impress a date. Plus, it won’t hurt your pocket; copas are just €5 and cocktails are €7.

After Work Chic
Looking for a chic way to end your day at your (undoubtedly) chic office? Or maybe you just want to rub shoulders with Madrid’s pijo crowd. Either way, head to barrio Salamanca for an after-work cocktail at a cool new club, Cuatrobajocero. Its design and ambiance was inspired by Manhattan hotspots, with luxury oozing from every creative cocktail and sinfully soft sofa. Divided into two floors, the sofa whites and regal purples of the décor make you feel like part of the royals. Plus, there’s music from DJ Bruno Le Funk, whose sessions include chill-out, lounge, funk, house, jazz, and fusion sounds. Stop by and try one of their signature drinks: the Fraise Royal, which is a mixture of strawberries, strawberry liquor, and cava; or the Ferdi, with Bailey’s, amaretto and Kahlua.
