Classic from the underground 80's that brings back lots of memories of the 90's... was always packed in spite of being big (two floors). Haven't been there in a while, though.

I was there a while ago (2 years?). I remember it as one of those places where the owners lets his buddies play records and some great music gets spun thanks to that.
Must go back next time I'm in Barcelona.

avoid it
After a recent incident reported in the paper, I strongly recommend avoiding any of Parrondo's several bar/restaurants. They're all in the Sol/Opera/Callao area.
Read the El Pais article (in Spanish) here
www.elpais.com/articulo/madrid/bar/elpepuespmad/20080706elpmad_4/Tes
Basically the article says that upon realizing that his customers were lesbians, Parrondo refused to continue serving them. The women decided to leave, but when they requested the complaints book the owner became aggressive and verbally abusive. The women had to wait for the police to exercise their right to file a complaint, though it is completely unnecessary.
And the punchline: a spokesperson for the restaurant claims they always make people wait for the police because if they didn't "people would file complaints for just anything".

50's inspired rock bar. A bit out of the bar-hopping route, but Gijon's not big enough for that to really matter.

Punk and rock n' roll in the front area and more indie oriented in the back room. Very classic Malasaña.

Cool little bar near the Plaza de España where you're likely to hear them spin Pavement, or to catch an interesting band. Run by nice people, too.
