Free WiFi, language exchange (intercambio) nights, used books (buy & sell) and a friendly international atmosphere make great excuses to stop by for drinks on a schoolnight.

Support your neighborhood guitar shop!
Musical Dominguez is a staple of my youth. It's where I bought my first guitars and equipment and where I still go to have adjustments made to my guitars. Recently they've done wonders with an old bass I brought back from the States. The place itself doesn't seem like much, compared to all the fancy places downtown, but they do good work and that's what matters most.

First stop for books in English
No matter how broke I am, I can always make it out the door of J&J's with something to increase the clutter on my bedside table. I've found great stuff for 2€, and saved quite a bit of money by buying the latest literary hypes second-hand. So I wasn't the first to read it, but I didn't have to shell out 25€ to find out who isn't the next Palahniuk. For books I want, first I got to J&J's and then I try Casa del Libro, Fnac or Crisol.
As for the cafe area, I like it when it isn't crowded (on a weekday afternoon, for example). They host activities like language exchange ('intercambio') and quiz night, which are great if you're new in town and/or want to meet new people.
