not what it used to be

It might have been a bad day, but my most recent visit to this Madrid classic was a disappointment.

We ordered 'patatas paja al cabrales' (ultra thin fries covered with a very strong blue cheese sauce). The fries were cold, kind of stiff and dry. And the sauce was watered - or oiled down - and barely a splash over the platter, most of it a pool of grease at the bottom.

Behind the Gran Via and Montera area, Casa Gilda supposed to be about rices. But I've only been here for breakfast (montaditos, croissants, toast...) and pinchos/tapas.

Nice, new, clean. Slow, boring, drab.

The patented recipe for a typical Spanish tomato-based sauce (salsa brava) is OK. But these places feel kind of soulless and drab.

This mid-priced bar-restaurant in Lavapiés has a nice atmosphere, It can fill up at peak hours, but it's pretty big. The place can handle it, but the service slows down. They serve breakfast, coffee, mid-day snacks... and, of course, tapas, lunch and dinner.

I don't usually order lasagna out because I'm very particular about it, but the one I had here was excellent. It had raisins, which was a nice touch.

Vegetarian friendly? There's nothing on the menu del dia, but a few dishes available if you order a la carte. Salads, the aforementioned lasagna, a couple of vegetable terrines, a noodle-vegetable stir fry.

One of my favorite places on calle Argumosa, in Lavapiés. A great place to take people for cañas and order a bite to eat, maybe even make a dinner out of it. Nice light. Hip, but unpretentious.

Vegetarian options are VERY limited, though.
