Farmers Market

Fresh produce

Houston isn't exactly a tourist city, so sometimes you have to get creative with your sightseeing. This farmers market on the north side of town is an institution. It's got incredible produce, a huge variety, and lots of character. Most--if not all--of the farmers are Mexican/Central American, as are many of the patrons, so there's tons of Latin American products (mole, cactus, etc.). It's also the favorite spot for local chefs, and anyone looking to buy really high quality fresh produce (in bulk, especially) for cheap. If you like open-air markets, it's a must-see. And if you get hungry there are a few taco trailers out back, and an awesome diner called Triple A Restaurant right next door.

Amazing vegetarian food

According to Bouldin Creek's website it's a "friendly, creative, laidback, open-minded, and conscious space." Which it is, and which makes it like many other Austin establishments. Their entire menu is vegetarian/vegan, and the Veggie Royale sandwich is hands down the best vegetarian sandwich I've ever had by a mile. They've also got tons of coffee and they serve beer. Cozy, artsy, delicious food, killer patio, and they play great music. Two thumbs way up.

Lively Tex-Mex in South Austin

In Austin there's no shortage of Tex-Mex options, but if you're looking for a full experience Maria's is a good choice. It's pretty kitschy, but it's fun and the food is delicious. They've got breakfast and lunch tacos, plus various entrees like enchiladas and a "meat plate" served with rice and beans.

A warning to any Mexicans not accustomed to Texanized Mexican food (or northern Mexican food): they serve their tacos in flour tortillas, not corn. The taco al pastor is well-seasoned and well-cooked (though I'm a bit ashamed to say that I've had better in South Brooklyn, but still these were very good). The migas taco is also highly recommendable, though it needs a bit of salsa to make it truly perfect.

Like most places in Austin, it's got a great back patio.

Carmelita Deli

Delicious Mexican sandwiches that will make you fat

From the outside Carmelita looks just like any other cheap deli/bodega in New York, but in the back room there is a kitchen, two tables, and a salsa bar. It's a "hole-in-the-wall" in every sense of the expression, and, true to form, it is astonishingly delicious. Their specialty is cemitas, sandwiches that (I think) come from Puebla. The cemitas are about the size of a hamburger and are piled high with your choice of meat (beef, tongue, various pig parts, or especially delicious chorizo), Mexican white cheese, avocados, and various sauces. It is the unholiest of food items and completely addictive. And it's not just the grease/cheese/sauce factor that makes them so alluring; the bread itself is unlike anything I've ever had. It's very soft and kind of spongy and perfect for soaking up the various flavors.

Of the sandwiches I've tried, the chorizo is definitely the best. They also have a quesillo (just cheese) option for vegetarians that is very delicious in its own right.

Carmelita also has soups, tostadas, and, of course, tacos, but the cemitas are the main attraction in my opinion.

The seating is very limited, so most people get their food to go. Cemitas are $6 and they're huuuuge. If you're not that hungry it's definitely big enough to split with someone.

Gourmet donuts

Food trucks are huge in Austin, and this is one of the best. I don't typically love donuts, but at Gourdough's they take them to another level. They're thick and crispy and covered in your choice of delicious toppings, such as fried chicken, honey butter, maple syrup icing, bacon, fresh fruit, cake batter...the list goes on and on (see menu on website). I tried the Mother Clucker and the Funky Monkey and both were very, very good (especially the Mother Clucker).

One word of caution: make sure you show up hungry! One donut probably has about 2,000 calories. It is a food EVENT, so you have to be ready for it and pace yourself.

Do not visit Austin without going to Gourdough's.

Pinche!

Not only does this place have a great name, it's also got got great food and it's really cheap. There are 7 options on the taco menu, all between $2-$4. I had a fish taco and a pork taco. They're famous for the fish tacos, but I actually preferred the pork. Note: they use corn tortillas for tacos. I prefer flour (I think that's a Texas thing), but they were still really good.

They also have burritos (meat and vegetarian) made with flour tortillas. Regular burritos are $6.95, and the California bean and cheese burrito is $5.95.

The two best things about Pinche Taqueria are the horchata and the breakfast burritos. Horchata is $2.75 and is quite good. Breakfast burritos are $4.95 for a hefty portion of eggs plus your choice of various meats (including chorizo) or pico de gallo (!) wrapped in a flour tortilla. I got the bacon and egg burrito with salsa and it was delicious.

Also they have Elote (Mexican-style corn on the cob) but it's not quite as good as Cafe Habana's.

It's a really small place and most people get to-go, but there are a few tables and if you can get one it's a pretty fun place to sit down and eat.

Great Yucca fries.

South Austin dive bar

This bar is great 1) because it's cheap, 2) because it has pretty much any arcade game you'd want to play (Big Buck Hunter, Pac Man, air hockey, pinball, etc.), 3) because it's a neighborhood bar that attracts different kinds of people. I was there on a Wednesday night and saw jocks, hipsters, young professionals, and garden variety drunks, all enjoying the cheap beer and fun games. It's actually pretty big, with two rooms, lots of tables, and, yes, an outdoor seating area. And there's a popcorn machine in the corner with all the free stale popcorn you can eat.

A great place to go if you're looking for somewhere unpretentious, cheap, and fun.

A hidden attraction

Whenever people ask me what they should see in New York I always suggest the 6th st. community garden. It's in my favorite neighborhood in New York (East Village/Alphabet City), it's a great example of community participation, and it just looks really cool. There's something sort of gothic and eerie about it, but definitely not in a bad way.

There's an amazing trash sculpture in there that you can see from the Ave. B side, and other than that it's just a normal, pretty garden. If you're taking a walk around the East Village be sure to stop by and have a look. It's open to the public Saturday and Sunday 1-6 p.m.

Fun art space and music venue/bar

I've been to a concert and a party at the GlassLands, and both were great experiences. It's mainly used for musical and other types of performances, but they also have fun events like official dance-offs and artsy things. They're open 6 nights a week and they have a bar that serves generous cups of beer on tap and, if you're feeling rowdy, $3 Colt 45 tall boys (plus various liquors, etc.).

Probably the coolest thing about the GlassLands is their "painting room" where you can create your own artwork with paint and brushes provided for you.

It's a very cool place with awesome homemade decor, and it's run by really friendly creative people. Check out the events calendar if you live in NYC or even if you're just passing through. Definitely worth a visit.

Peter Pan Mini-Golf

BYOB mini-golf

In short: this place is a trip. It's a seemingly ancient mini-golf course that encourages you to BYOB (bring your own beer). Of course, this is especially absurd since mini-golf isn't typically known as an activity performed while sipping on a tall boy of Lone Star. They even go so far as to provide a drink stand at each hole where you can set your beverage while you putt through oftentimes horrifying papier mache obstacles. It's $5 for 18 holes, and a surprisingly tame scene considering the context.

Heads up: you're not supposed to bring glass bottles onto the course.
