Delicious Venezuelan food II

This is the Brooklyn (Williamsburg) location of the excellent arepas bar in the East Village.

Nice atmosphere and they have what looks like a pretty kickass patio for the warmer months.

Typical but nice East Williamsburg bar

Sweet Ups is a lot like Bushwick Country Club (11870.com/pro/bushwick-country-club): small, dark, hip-but-down-to-earth, a little more expensive than it really should be ($4 for a Coors Light draft? psh). The real upside is that it's got awesome booths which make it a great hangout spot if you just want to go out with your friends and not have to mingle. The other plus is that their (womens) bathroom is far and away the one of the nicest public restrooms I've ever seen (in a bar certainly, and even in general). Typically bar restrooms range from vaguely acceptable to downright nightmarish, so it's a very pleasant surprise when they're as nice as this one. Next time I go I'll get a picture.

Carmelita Deli

Delicious Mexican sandwiches that will make you fat

From the outside Carmelita looks just like any other cheap deli/bodega in New York, but in the back room there is a kitchen, two tables, and a salsa bar. It's a "hole-in-the-wall" in every sense of the expression, and, true to form, it is astonishingly delicious. Their specialty is cemitas, sandwiches that (I think) come from Puebla. The cemitas are about the size of a hamburger and are piled high with your choice of meat (beef, tongue, various pig parts, or especially delicious chorizo), Mexican white cheese, avocados, and various sauces. It is the unholiest of food items and completely addictive. And it's not just the grease/cheese/sauce factor that makes them so alluring; the bread itself is unlike anything I've ever had. It's very soft and kind of spongy and perfect for soaking up the various flavors.

Of the sandwiches I've tried, the chorizo is definitely the best. They also have a quesillo (just cheese) option for vegetarians that is very delicious in its own right.

Carmelita also has soups, tostadas, and, of course, tacos, but the cemitas are the main attraction in my opinion.

The seating is very limited, so most people get their food to go. Cemitas are $6 and they're huuuuge. If you're not that hungry it's definitely big enough to split with someone.

Gourmet pizza in Bushwick

If you ever find yourself hanging out off of the Morgan L stop, this is a great option for a nice, fancy-ish dinner that's not crazy expensive. It's in kind of a hidden corner of the stark, warehouse-ridden section of East Williamsburg/Bushwick, and from the outside you wouldn't expect such a warm, rustic experience. It's got really warm lighting and wooden bench tables, and is generally a pleasant place to sit down.

The pizza is inching towards expensive (in the $8-$12 range mostly), but is very high quality and the portion size is perfect. They have a ton of great options, and a make-your-own pizza with a long list of toppings, including egg, prosciutto, and smoked mozzarella.

They used to be BYOB, but just got their liquor license so they now serve outrageously overpriced wine. We brought our own bottle and weaseled a $10 "corking fee" which was still about $10 cheaper than their cheapest wine. And from what I remember they have beer for $4.

Besides the ridiculous booze prices it's definitely a recommendable dinner spot.

Cheap and delicious salvadoran food

A friend of mine took me to this restaurant as a cheaper alternative to Caracas. It's friendly and unpretentious and the pupusas are $2! We got two pupusas each and split a corn cob and dessert and it was a really decent meal. They have a pretty basic pupusa selection, mostly just different combinations of meat, cheese, and beans, although I think my favorite that I tried was jalapeño and cheese. They also have a much more extensive seafood and entree menu. If you're looking for a simple, cheap meal in a pleasant atmosphere this is definitely the way to go.

Excellent tacos

Mexican food in New York is a touchy subject with many people (myself included), so I would never casually suggest that I'd found excellent tacos in New York. But yes, I did find them in Sunset Park. And they cost $1.25 each.

I got three tacos (they're pretty small)--carnitas, al pastor, and carne asada, and all three were extremely tasty and well cooked. They have lots of options on the taco menu, including lengua (tongue). Also, it's pretty big and very clean and generally a nice place to sit and eat (good music, friendly waiters, etc.).

Another great thing about this place is that it's BYOB and there's a convenience store down the block that sells 24 oz. cans of Modelo Especial for $2.50, so you can pick one of those up, then get three tacos and have a meal and drinks for less than $10.

Ironic East Williamsburg bar

Even though it's cutely called the "Bushwick" Country Club, this place is really more a part of East Williamsburg. Despite its grating ironic name it's actually a really decent borderline dive bar. They've got several booths and tables, making it a good place to meet up with a group of friends for drinks. $4 draft beers and $5 mixed drinks--on the cheap side of standard. It's dark and grungy but the music isn't too loud and the crowd is really laid back.

Cheap brunch in Williamsburg

This place just opened up relatively recently and I think they're trying to get business so they've instituted a flat-rate "Broke Ass Brunch" where every item on the brunch menu is $6. They've got several pretty standard but very decent options, including your basic eggs-with-cheese, pancakes, french toast, etc. Most options come with superior tater tots.

It's a cozy, down-to-earth place, but it was pretty dead at 12 on a Sunday, which is usually a pretty busy brunch time, so I'm not sure if it's going to make it. The food was good, though not earth-shattering...but definitely worth $6.

It's also a bar with some pretty fun-looking weekly events, such as $2 PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon beer) and movie night. Huge whiskey selection.

Cheap stop in Williamsburg

This is a nice, unpretentious bar in Williamsburg. It's vaguely white trash-themed, but not over the top or silly. They've got a few good drink specials ($4 or $5 for a bottle of beer and a shot of liquor), and a house drink called the Beam & Cream which is Jim Beam whiskey mixed with cream soda--sounds kind of gross but it's actually really tasty, and the one I had was about 2/3 whiskey, so it was definitely worth the $6.50.

Darts, pool, a few tables. The music was decent, the crowd was laid back, especially for the neighborhood. And they serve awesome gross food like Frito Pie (which is Fritos, chili, and cheese).

Fun art space and music venue/bar

I've been to a concert and a party at the GlassLands, and both were great experiences. It's mainly used for musical and other types of performances, but they also have fun events like official dance-offs and artsy things. They're open 6 nights a week and they have a bar that serves generous cups of beer on tap and, if you're feeling rowdy, $3 Colt 45 tall boys (plus various liquors, etc.).

Probably the coolest thing about the GlassLands is their "painting room" where you can create your own artwork with paint and brushes provided for you.

It's a very cool place with awesome homemade decor, and it's run by really friendly creative people. Check out the events calendar if you live in NYC or even if you're just passing through. Definitely worth a visit.
