Fresh produce

Houston isn't exactly a tourist city, so sometimes you have to get creative with your sightseeing. This farmers market on the north side of town is an institution. It's got incredible produce, a huge variety, and lots of character. Most--if not all--of the farmers are Mexican/Central American, as are many of the patrons, so there's tons of Latin American products (mole, cactus, etc.). It's also the favorite spot for local chefs, and anyone looking to buy really high quality fresh produce (in bulk, especially) for cheap. If you like open-air markets, it's a must-see. And if you get hungry there are a few taco trailers out back, and an awesome diner called Triple A Restaurant right next door.

This is a great little bar right in the heart of the Montrose district of Houston. It's got really cool art on the walls, plenty of seating, cool lighting, and, most importantly, cheap drinks! Bottles of Lone Star are $2.50 and gin gimlets are $3.50. It's by far the best bar I've been to in Houston, and it's in a great location. The only problem is that it only has about 8 parking spaces, so you're left to park at your own risk in the nearby neighborhood. Watch for towing signs!

A Houston landmark

What Houston lacks in charm and beauty it more than makes up for in greasy, awesome food. House of Pies has been around since the 1960s (a long time in Houston years!) and is the ultimate in late-night dining. Open 24 hours, it's one of the only refuges for bored/drunk/stoned citizens in the wee hours.

Obviously there's a huge selection of pies, but there's also an entire menu of fantastic diner food. My typical order is a slice of French Blackbottom or Bayou Goo and a side of tater tots (or "cottage fries" as they mysteriously refer to them). OR I get the waffle platter because I'm convinced it's the best waffle in the whole state. Hands down. Get the waffle platter.

It's also just a great place to go hang out with friends without having to worry about the place closing down on you. My formative years would not have been the same without it.

My favorite movie theater in Houston

As one of Houston's oldest buildings AND an independent movie theater, the River Oaks is definitely one of my favorite places in town. It's only got three screens, but the downstairs theater is really beautiful, and they've got a fantastic midnight movie series. And a fully-stocked bar and cool lounge area upstairs.

Amazing free museum

While the Museum of Fine Arts Houston is a lovely place with lots of fantastic art, the Menil Collection is...free! And they've got a pretty impressive collection of works by Magritte (and other surrealists--including a room of surrealist artifacts), Calder, and Rothko, not to mention their impressive collection of ancient, African, and Byzantine art. AND an entire separate building devoted to the Cy Twombly collection. The guy who works at the desk in that building is good friends with the squirrels who live in the tree outside and he'll do a cool trick with them if you ask him.

It's a great place!

A cool bar in Houston

I went here once for a concert and really enjoyed drinking beers on the patio. I didn't spend much time in the bar itself, but it had a good vibe and seemed like a pretty cool place.

Best vintage shopping in Houston

A fun store in a fun neighborhood. Retropolis is relatively big for a vintage shop and has tons of great vintage and thrift clothing. I've been going for years, and while I don't find something every time I go, it's always fun just to look at some of the weird bullshit they have on the racks--and occasionally you get a gem (one time we found a large orange sweater with the word "whore" knitted on it). Jewelry and a few items from local designers as well.

My favorite Tex-Mex in Houston

Most (if not all) neighborhoods in and around Houston have their own beloved Tex-Mex restaurants, and this is mine. My family used to go here every Friday night to eat enchiladas and drink margaritas. It's a pretty standard tex-mex hole-in-the-wall, but for my money they've got the best cheese enchiladas around. Everything about it--from the decor to the endless free chips--is quintessentially tex-mex, and I love it.

Traditional Tex-Mex

This place is in the big leagues of tex-mex, and most people know about it because of the billboard on I-45. It's a bit over-priced (IMO), but it's open 24 hours and the horchata is INCREDIBLE. Like drinking a cinnamon roll. And the patio is nice.
