A cool bar with good taste in movies
This bar feels hip enough to be in the Lower East Side, but isn't snobby or annoying. It's huge, but actually feels kind of like a dive. It was pretty dark and the music was a bit loud, but it was fun '70s rock, some new wave, and, if I remember correctly, "Bohemian Like You" by the Dandy Warhols. Stuff like that.
Most importantly, to me, however was the fact that they were projecting the movie Jaws in the back room. I was thrilled. It really put a nice vibe in the room (in my opinion at least).
As it was kind of loud and rambunctious it might be a good stop for later in the evening when what you're saying doesn't make any sense anyway so it doesn't matter if anyone can hear you.

Bonus: every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month Nacotheque holds a party in the basement (www.nacotheque.com/_sgg/f10000.htm). It's $5 to get in and very worth it. Small dance floor, Spanish language music of all kinds (but all danceable). By far one of the best nights out I've had in New York (especially for only $5!).

Mobile dessert
The dessert truck has become somewhat of an institution in lower Manhattan. It's basically like an ice cream truck but with gourmet desserts. For instance, bread pudding with bacon custard sauce, goat cheese cake, stuff like that. The prices are between $3 and $6, which is actually quite reasonable for a high end dessert in the city. Around 9 p.m., especially on weekends, there's usually a line, but the service is fast and it's definitely worth the wait. The bread pudding is incredible.
It parks at the corner of 3rd ave. and St. Mark's (8th st.) from 6 p.m.-midnight.

Eat chicken wings like a real American
After months of hype my roommates finally took me to this place on a Monday night for their 10 cent wing special, and I have to say: it's nothing short of incredible. The wings themselves are pretty standard, taste-wise nothing extraordinary; they taste like chicken wings, and that's always delicious enough as a starting point.
The deal is that every Monday and Wednesday night from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. they serve chicken wings (Buffalo-style in varying degrees of spiciness and BBQ flavor) for 10 cents each. The catch is that you have to order in increments of 20, so you get 20 wings for $2, 40 wings for $4, etc. So it's best to go with a group of people. After 7 p.m. pints of the house beer are $4 (not bad at all for a pint in Manhattan). The bar itself is a surprisingly tasteful sports bar that's more like a pub (it has tables and booths). Not at all a bad atmosphere in which to consume obscene amounts of chicken.
This is far and away one of the best deals I've ever seen--in New York or elsewhere--and it's a testament to good old fashioned American gluttony, which makes it both comforting and repulsive.

Tasty and tasteful fried chicken
If you're looking for truly southern-tasting fried chicken this place isn't ideal, but it's very good nonetheless. The breading is pretty thin, but it's very well-seasoned. Overall not as greasy as typical fried chicken, but perhaps that's not so terrible.
They have an extensive sides menu. The mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes are really great. The fried okra is very tasty, but they don't cut it up and don't use a lot of breading so it doesn't taste like real fried okra (to me, at least).

Fun dive bar in Alphabet City
This place is really laid back and friendly. It's got a small bar and a room with some tables and they play mostly older stuff like The Band and old Western Swing and Motown. It's cheap for a Manhattan bar, but still a bit pricey compared to Brooklyn. The PBR/shot of whiskey drink special is $7 even though it's worth $4 at the most. Still, it's a great place to hang out and very unpretentious. The crowd was small and mostly regulars. They've got a jukebox and a photobooth.

This bar is near perfect in my opinion. It's small, but not claustrophobic, dark, but not cave-like, and casual but not a bro bar. The interior has great lighting, neat art on the walls, and several tables.
The music probably varies depending on the DJ, but when I was there it was a great mixture of '80s and '90s alternative (Supergrass, etc.).
The drinks were standard price for Manhattan: $6 for beer on tap, $6 for a whiskey sour. The crowd was mostly people in their mid-20s, kind of hip but not hipsters. The bartenders were friendly. My only complaint is that the music was just a little too loud, making conversation a little difficult.

Delicious Venezuelan food
There's usually a wait (sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes an hour) to eat in at the restaurant, but if you can it's very worth it. It's a great place with a very nice atmosphere and a friendly staff. But there's also the to-go option next door if you can't wait.
They have a great selection of arepas between $4 and $8, as well as empanadas for $4-$5. And they fry the empanadas so they're extra awesome. The food is creative, delicious, and reasonably priced. Also, there are several vegetarian items, and an option to substitute tofu for meat in the arepas.

Addictive pizza
There are pizza places on every other block in New York, and most of them are really mediocre, but this one is truly amazing because their specialty is artichoke pizza, which is spinach and artichoke dip and cheese on pizza crust and it is unbelievably tasty. I'm not sure how pervasive spinach and artichoke dip is around the world, but in America it's a staple of suburban chain restaurants (Chili's, for instance), so the concept of it on pizza is simultaneously pedestrian and inspired and above all delicious. I really can't emphasize enough how satisfying this pizza is.
The restaurant itself is very tiny and to-go only, so it's not a dine-in option. Artichoke slices are $4, which is on the pricey size but they're extremely large and so incredibly delicious that it's definitely worth the money. If you're going to do New York pizza, this is probably your best bet.

A bar with wood paneling
This bar is decorated like a suburban home from the 1970s/'80s, complete with wood paneling and family pictures on the wall. The concept is cute but kind of irritating in its irony, but then once you get over it and decide to not let the irony bother you it's a pretty cool place. They play mostly '70s rock (I heard lots of Zeppelin and Bowie when I was there). They also played several Bob Marley songs.
The crowd was a little bro-ish and the pool table is inconveniently placed, but other than that I enjoyed myself, especially since the drinks are so cheap ($2 PBRs). Though it's not perfect, it's definitely a good place to hang around and get drunk off of cheap beer.

Tasty, cheap organic food
This is a pleasant place to get a nice, healthy meal. They use only organic ingredients from local farmers, and everything on the menu is vegetarian (if I remember correctly). I had the three bean chili and it was really good. They've got a few Asian dishes and various other things--it's a pretty eclectic menu. The ambiance is warm, and the prices are surprisingly reasonable considering the organic angle. Most entrees are around $10.
Most importantly, it's a BYOB (bring your own beer) establishment. Which means that instead of paying $10 extra to buy wine from the restaurant you can bring your own $3 bottle and drink on the cheap. And they even open the bottle for you! But just keep in mind that they don't serve any alcohol there, so if you want to drink with dinner make sure to bring your own.
