Delicious Mexican sandwiches that will make you fat
From the outside Carmelita looks just like any other cheap deli/bodega in New York, but in the back room there is a kitchen, two tables, and a salsa bar. It's a "hole-in-the-wall" in every sense of the expression, and, true to form, it is astonishingly delicious. Their specialty is cemitas, sandwiches that (I think) come from Puebla. The cemitas are about the size of a hamburger and are piled high with your choice of meat (beef, tongue, various pig parts, or especially delicious chorizo), Mexican white cheese, avocados, and various sauces. It is the unholiest of food items and completely addictive. And it's not just the grease/cheese/sauce factor that makes them so alluring; the bread itself is unlike anything I've ever had. It's very soft and kind of spongy and perfect for soaking up the various flavors.
Of the sandwiches I've tried, the chorizo is definitely the best. They also have a quesillo (just cheese) option for vegetarians that is very delicious in its own right.
Carmelita also has soups, tostadas, and, of course, tacos, but the cemitas are the main attraction in my opinion.
The seating is very limited, so most people get their food to go. Cemitas are $6 and they're huuuuge. If you're not that hungry it's definitely big enough to split with someone.

Cheap beer
This is a pretty basic no-frills bar: pool table, a couple of TVs playing sports, neighborhood crowd, etc. But it's got incredible drink specials. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesdays they've got $1 bottles of Lone Star, Miller High Life, and Natty Light (respectively). They play old-time country and they've got a big patio that's perfect for the evenings. Excellent option if you're willing to drink cheap beer all night.
Bonus: across the street from the BYOB mini golf course (11870.com/pro/peter-pan-mini-golf).

Taco trailer!
There's a grand tradition in Texas (and in California too, I've heard): the taco trailer. It's cheap, it's delicious, it's somewhat of a novelty: you can't go wrong. Anyone who lives or works near a taco trailer will claim that THEIR taco trailer is the BEST in the entire city. The truth is that this is mostly a psychological/emotional matter, and most taco trailers are more or less the same. La Flor in South Austin is certainly great, though more or less...it's a taco trailer (which is to say that it's amazing but really nothing all that special). I tried their breakfast tacos, which are served on flour tortillas (apparently their lunch tacos are served on homemade corn tortillas). They were very good, especially with the truly stellar red salsa. The sausage breakfast taco is curiously filled with Jimmy Dean-style sausage and not chorizo, which doesn't seem very authentic, but it was delicious so I won't complain.
$3.25 for two tacos, which is a decent-sized meal. And it's in the parking lot of a convenience store in case you want to buy a drink. Definitely worth a try if you're feeling hungry and cheap in South Austin.

South Austin dive bar
This bar is great 1) because it's cheap, 2) because it has pretty much any arcade game you'd want to play (Big Buck Hunter, Pac Man, air hockey, pinball, etc.), 3) because it's a neighborhood bar that attracts different kinds of people. I was there on a Wednesday night and saw jocks, hipsters, young professionals, and garden variety drunks, all enjoying the cheap beer and fun games. It's actually pretty big, with two rooms, lots of tables, and, yes, an outdoor seating area. And there's a popcorn machine in the corner with all the free stale popcorn you can eat.
A great place to go if you're looking for somewhere unpretentious, cheap, and fun.

Eat chicken wings like a real American
After months of hype my roommates finally took me to this place on a Monday night for their 10 cent wing special, and I have to say: it's nothing short of incredible. The wings themselves are pretty standard, taste-wise nothing extraordinary; they taste like chicken wings, and that's always delicious enough as a starting point.
The deal is that every Monday and Wednesday night from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. they serve chicken wings (Buffalo-style in varying degrees of spiciness and BBQ flavor) for 10 cents each. The catch is that you have to order in increments of 20, so you get 20 wings for $2, 40 wings for $4, etc. So it's best to go with a group of people. After 7 p.m. pints of the house beer are $4 (not bad at all for a pint in Manhattan). The bar itself is a surprisingly tasteful sports bar that's more like a pub (it has tables and booths). Not at all a bad atmosphere in which to consume obscene amounts of chicken.
This is far and away one of the best deals I've ever seen--in New York or elsewhere--and it's a testament to good old fashioned American gluttony, which makes it both comforting and repulsive.

Cheap and delicious salvadoran food
A friend of mine took me to this restaurant as a cheaper alternative to Caracas. It's friendly and unpretentious and the pupusas are $2! We got two pupusas each and split a corn cob and dessert and it was a really decent meal. They have a pretty basic pupusa selection, mostly just different combinations of meat, cheese, and beans, although I think my favorite that I tried was jalapeño and cheese. They also have a much more extensive seafood and entree menu. If you're looking for a simple, cheap meal in a pleasant atmosphere this is definitely the way to go.

Excellent tacos
Mexican food in New York is a touchy subject with many people (myself included), so I would never casually suggest that I'd found excellent tacos in New York. But yes, I did find them in Sunset Park. And they cost $1.25 each.
I got three tacos (they're pretty small)--carnitas, al pastor, and carne asada, and all three were extremely tasty and well cooked. They have lots of options on the taco menu, including lengua (tongue). Also, it's pretty big and very clean and generally a nice place to sit and eat (good music, friendly waiters, etc.).
Another great thing about this place is that it's BYOB and there's a convenience store down the block that sells 24 oz. cans of Modelo Especial for $2.50, so you can pick one of those up, then get three tacos and have a meal and drinks for less than $10.

A bar with wood paneling
This bar is decorated like a suburban home from the 1970s/'80s, complete with wood paneling and family pictures on the wall. The concept is cute but kind of irritating in its irony, but then once you get over it and decide to not let the irony bother you it's a pretty cool place. They play mostly '70s rock (I heard lots of Zeppelin and Bowie when I was there). They also played several Bob Marley songs.
The crowd was a little bro-ish and the pool table is inconveniently placed, but other than that I enjoyed myself, especially since the drinks are so cheap ($2 PBRs). Though it's not perfect, it's definitely a good place to hang around and get drunk off of cheap beer.
