A cool bar with good taste in movies
This bar feels hip enough to be in the Lower East Side, but isn't snobby or annoying. It's huge, but actually feels kind of like a dive. It was pretty dark and the music was a bit loud, but it was fun '70s rock, some new wave, and, if I remember correctly, "Bohemian Like You" by the Dandy Warhols. Stuff like that.
Most importantly, to me, however was the fact that they were projecting the movie Jaws in the back room. I was thrilled. It really put a nice vibe in the room (in my opinion at least).
As it was kind of loud and rambunctious it might be a good stop for later in the evening when what you're saying doesn't make any sense anyway so it doesn't matter if anyone can hear you.

Bonus: every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month Nacotheque holds a party in the basement (www.nacotheque.com/_sgg/f10000.htm). It's $5 to get in and very worth it. Small dance floor, Spanish language music of all kinds (but all danceable). By far one of the best nights out I've had in New York (especially for only $5!).

A bar with wood paneling
This bar is decorated like a suburban home from the 1970s/'80s, complete with wood paneling and family pictures on the wall. The concept is cute but kind of irritating in its irony, but then once you get over it and decide to not let the irony bother you it's a pretty cool place. They play mostly '70s rock (I heard lots of Zeppelin and Bowie when I was there). They also played several Bob Marley songs.
The crowd was a little bro-ish and the pool table is inconveniently placed, but other than that I enjoyed myself, especially since the drinks are so cheap ($2 PBRs). Though it's not perfect, it's definitely a good place to hang around and get drunk off of cheap beer.

Good enough for a diner in New York
DIners are supposed to be kind of dingy and, most importantly, really cheap. Remedy is a little too spiffy-looking, and the food is about $2 more expensive than I typically like to pay at a diner, but...in New York city you can't expect to find anything better, really (as far as diners go). The food is fairly tasty, it's got booths, and it generally achieves providing a diner experience.
I had brunch here and was actually quite impressed. It's $15 for two courses (not bad for New York brunch) and they definitely give you plenty of food. There are also lots of good, surprisingly creative options on the brunch menu. I got huevos rancheros, and it was served in a crispy taco bowl with saffron rice and chorizo. My friends got the breakfast burrito, which was huge and looked delicious. Regular non-brunch breakfast items are around between $6 and $10. Most other menu items $10 or less.
Big bonus: open 24 hours.
I recommend it if you're after a laid back diner experience in New York. Or if you just want a fairly cheap breakfast/lunch.

Friendly bike shop
This is a nice little bike shop in the Lower East Side (right by the Williamsburg bridge). They fix flats for about $12, sell bikes and bike parts, do all kinds of repairs, etc. When I went the staff was really friendly and helpful.
