Gourmet donuts
Kate Richardson lo descubrió en julio de 2010
Food trucks are huge in Austin, and this is one of the best. I don't typically love donuts, but at Gourdough's they take them to another level. They're thick and crispy and covered in your choice of delicious toppings, such as fried chicken, honey butter, maple syrup icing, bacon, fresh fruit, cake batter...the list goes on and on (see menu on website). I tried the Mother Clucker and the Funky Monkey and both were very, very good (especially the Mother Clucker).
One word of caution: make sure you show up hungry! One donut probably has about 2,000 calories. It is a food EVENT, so you have to be ready for it and pace yourself.
Do not visit Austin without going to Gourdough's.

High quality diner food
Kate Richardson lo descubrió en diciembre de 2009
Magnolia Cafe is an Austin classic. It's open 24/7 and it has a big, creative menu. They've got basics like burgers and omelets, plus some tex-mex and they serve breakfast all day, like any self-respecting diner.
Unfortunately there's usually a wait (especially on weekends) because it's so popular and tasty, but it's worth it!

Yet another great Austin bar
Kate Richardson lo descubrió en diciembre de 2009
Rio Rita is everything I ever hope for in a bar: plenty of seating, cheap drinks, interesting people, low lighting, and pleasant music played at a reasonable level. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of it, but the interior is decorated with local art for sale and the walls are a nice blue color. There are couches, chairs, and tables throughout the bar, and a back patio with a few tables. When I was there a group of musicians (fiddles, banjos, acoustic guitars, other Americana instruments) played for at least 3 hours in a corner, providing the bar with a nice, cozy ambiance.
Drinks are pretty standard: around $2.50 for beer and $7 for cocktails. It's probably my favorite bar I've been to in Austin. Don't miss out!

Cheap beer
Kate Richardson lo descubrió en julio de 2009
This is a pretty basic no-frills bar: pool table, a couple of TVs playing sports, neighborhood crowd, etc. But it's got incredible drink specials. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesdays they've got $1 bottles of Lone Star, Miller High Life, and Natty Light (respectively). They play old-time country and they've got a big patio that's perfect for the evenings. Excellent option if you're willing to drink cheap beer all night.
Bonus: across the street from the BYOB mini golf course (11870.com/pro/peter-pan-mini-golf).

BYOB mini-golf
Kate Richardson lo descubrió en julio de 2009
In short: this place is a trip. It's a seemingly ancient mini-golf course that encourages you to BYOB (bring your own beer). Of course, this is especially absurd since mini-golf isn't typically known as an activity performed while sipping on a tall boy of Lone Star. They even go so far as to provide a drink stand at each hole where you can set your beverage while you putt through oftentimes horrifying papier mache obstacles. It's $5 for 18 holes, and a surprisingly tame scene considering the context.
Heads up: you're not supposed to bring glass bottles onto the course.
Swimming hole
Kate Richardson lo descubrió en julio de 2009
Austin in summer is sometimes unfathomably hot. When the temperature gets above 95 (which it does almost every day in July and August) Barton Springs is by far your best midday option. It's a constructed pool that's fed by underground springs and the water temperature is 68 degrees year-round (pretty chilly, but perfect for the summer). The water is all-natural and constantly flowing, so it's a rare opportunity to swim in very clean all-natural fresh water. The city maintains it incredibly well, and it's a great place to spend an afternoon.
The fare is $3 for the actual pool, although there's an adjoining free area with shallower water that doubles as a dog park.

Amazing vegetarian food
Kate Richardson lo descubrió en julio de 2009
According to Bouldin Creek's website it's a "friendly, creative, laidback, open-minded, and conscious space." Which it is, and which makes it like many other Austin establishments. Their entire menu is vegetarian/vegan, and the Veggie Royale sandwich is hands down the best vegetarian sandwich I've ever had by a mile. They've also got tons of coffee and they serve beer. Cozy, artsy, delicious food, killer patio, and they play great music. Two thumbs way up.

The perfect 24 hour restaurant
Kate Richardson lo descubrió en junio de 2009
Kerbey Lane is a local Austin restaurant with four locations around the city. I ate at the South Austin diner-style location at around 1:30 a.m. on a Saturday night and it was everything a late-night diner experience should be: coffee, too much food, and drunk patrons.
What makes Kerbey Lane a bit different from a true diner is that the menu is actually very extensive with tons of vegetarian and even vegan options, plus tex-mex stuff and lots of unique and/or creative items (see the menu on the website for an idea). Also, the food is a bit higher quality (and thus slightly more expensive, but it's worth it) than typical diner fare. However, true to diner culture, breakfast is served 24/7. I had the migas (tex-mex style, not the Spanish dish), which were served with fresh pico de gallo and generally great. I also tasted the queso (SO excellent for something that's usually pretty basic), the potato flautas (very tasty and served with a delicious dipping sauce), and the sticky muffin (their version of a cinnamon roll, very good). Everything I tried was above and beyond delicious.
The other great thing about Kerbey Lane is that they're very supportive of local farmers and suppliers and they use really fresh ingredients. The only drawback was the generally shabby appearance of the restaurant, but that didn't in any way limit the experience. We were a big group and our server was incredibly nice and cheerful, especially for 2 a.m.
This place is a must for a trip to Austin. I can't wait to go back and try other things on the menu.

Very Austin-ish
Kate Richardson lo descubrió en junio de 2009
Austin has a reputation for being a city of laid-back weirdos, and at Freddie's you certainly get that experience. Several of the reviews on Yelp take issue with the service, but when I went it was friendly and prompt, so it probably depends entirely on who your waiter is. Anyway, it's a pretty basic American food menu (burgers, sandwiches, brisket, etc.), but most of the stuff has a creative or slightly more interesting twist. I had the Banana Fire Burger (hot wing sauce, bleu cheese, and banana peppers) and it was extremely delicious. A friend had the Lord of the Rings Burger, which is a giant onion ring on a hamburger. It was also very good. Bonus: you can get your burgers on Texas Toast!
They've got a huge back yard seating area, which is definitely where you want to be if the weather is nice. There's an area for kids to play and a place to play washer toss (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washer_pitching), plus you're allowed to bring your dog if you have one. It's a pretty loose atmosphere. A really cool place to get a hamburger and a have a beer under some giant oak trees.
Lots of vegetarian options (plus you can get any of the hamburgers with a veggie burger or grilled portabella).

Taco trailer!
Kate Richardson lo descubrió en junio de 2009
There's a grand tradition in Texas (and in California too, I've heard): the taco trailer. It's cheap, it's delicious, it's somewhat of a novelty: you can't go wrong. Anyone who lives or works near a taco trailer will claim that THEIR taco trailer is the BEST in the entire city. The truth is that this is mostly a psychological/emotional matter, and most taco trailers are more or less the same. La Flor in South Austin is certainly great, though more or less...it's a taco trailer (which is to say that it's amazing but really nothing all that special). I tried their breakfast tacos, which are served on flour tortillas (apparently their lunch tacos are served on homemade corn tortillas). They were very good, especially with the truly stellar red salsa. The sausage breakfast taco is curiously filled with Jimmy Dean-style sausage and not chorizo, which doesn't seem very authentic, but it was delicious so I won't complain.
$3.25 for two tacos, which is a decent-sized meal. And it's in the parking lot of a convenience store in case you want to buy a drink. Definitely worth a try if you're feeling hungry and cheap in South Austin.
