House of Pies Restaurant & Bakery: Main Office

What Houston lacks in charm and beauty it more than makes up for in greasy, awesome food. House of Pies has been around since the 1960s (a long time in Houston years!) and is the ultimate in late-night dining. Open 24 hours, it's one of the only refuges for bored/drunk/stoned citizens in the wee hours.

Obviously there's a huge selection of pies, but there's also an entire menu of fantastic diner food. My typical order is a slice of French Blackbottom or Bayou Goo and a side of tater tots (or "cottage fries" as they mysteriously refer to them). OR I get the waffle platter because I'm convinced it's the best waffle in the whole state. Hands down. Get the waffle platter.

It's also just a great place to go hang out with friends without having to worry about the place closing down on you. My formative years would not have been the same without it.
