Originally from Canada, I have lived in Spain since 1992 (moved to Sevilla in 1993). A couple of years ago I started a blog about tapas in Sevilla.

me encanta, uno de mis favoritos

Las Tres Jotas (Juan, Jeanine & Jesús) have done it again. As at the original La Azotea in c/Jesús del Gran Poder, their newly opened second location offers superb food and excellent service in a cosy and convivial atmosphere. Same great menu and fabulous wine list (with several varieties available by the glass) along with daily specials. I have too many favourite tapas to list so I’ll let the photos below speak for themselves.

Tapas are available at the bar, full and half raciones at the tables. In December there will be a change in the opening hours when La Azotea Zaragoza starts serving breakfast – will keep you posted.

A friend in Sevilla recommended La Cosmopolita – and I’m very glad he did. Opened in October 2010 and run by owner Borja Galan and jefe de cocina Daniel Carnero, it’s a terrific spot just off the calle Granada in the centre of Málaga. Open for breakfast at 8.30, with tapas served between 1.00 – 16.00 and 20.00 – midnight. The decor is very fresh, with a twist on traditional. As are the tapas. You must try the cecina croquettes – quite possibly the best croquetas I’ve ever had, and that’s saying something. Also excellent are the bulltail meatballs in gravy and the ravioli filled with smoked aubergine. The “pan de cristal” looked delicious but I will need to go back with a friend or two as they are quite a big serving. Likewise the fabada Asturiana, which my neighbours were having (looked so good I asked for a photo). Great service and nice casual ambience.

me gusta

Ernest Masalaña (of Gastromium fame) has branched out on his own and created a delightful setting for his eclectic mix of homespun and fusion tapas at the recently opend Bar Antojo. The tapas and media raciones are very reasonably priced and excellent quality, and there is a unique wine list on the wall showing framed photos of the 20 wines that are available by the glass as well as by the bottle. It’s early days yet to talk about service, which hopefully will improve (quite erratic, albeit friendly, and staff not very knowledgeable). There is also a bit of a style vs substance thing going on, which I’m sure will also get sorted out (eg. bread served in burlap bags seemed a bit too “clever” for its own good). But overall a great atmosphere and selection of tapas which has something for everyone.

Nice that it’s open for breakfast and the upstairs room is perfect for curling up with a coffee and a book or newspaper on one of the welcoming plump leather sofas.

Just opened! Reinas is the new “sister bar” of La Traviesa, situated just two doors over in the Plaza Regina. This new abacería/tasting bar is stocked full of fabulous wines and food products which you can sample before you buy to take home, or just stop in for a snack or a light meal. There are 12 wines on offer by the glass, which change weekly, along with a nice selection of tapas.

Coming soon: an upstairs private dining room for groups of 4-8 people. Tasting menus with wines will be served by the charming & knowledgable Antonio, who will take you through each course and ensure an interesting and pleasurable evening.

At the back of the Encarnación Market (near the Plaza Regina exit) you’ll find Pepe at La Encarnación, serving up fabulous fresh fish, either fried or grilled. Needless to say it’s all market-fresh and the prices are unbeatable at 2 euros a tapa. Everything’s a bit rough & ready, and it’s self-service at the tables, but the beer is cold and the food is terrific. Great place to stop for a quick lunch or snack. Also open for breakfast.

está OK

I was happily surprised to find that Al Solito Posto opens for breakfast at their great new location in the recently renovated Plaza de las Pescaderías, and was even happier when I tasted their coffee. Excellent. I have visited their beachside restaurant in Zahara de los Atunes and the food there is very good. Likewise here. Okay, the pancetta could have been somewhat less fatty and the pizza might have had a bit more chorizo, but overall Al Solito Posto is a very pleasant place to drop in for a meal, either inside or out on the terrace. Lots of pasta and risotto dishes available too, as well as some very good Italian wines. The service is attentive, friendly and efficient.
