Unpretentious (false) vegetarian

está OK

Acceptable pseudo-vegetarian in Chueca.
The menu includes a handful of free-range chicken dishes (!?).
The venue is sober, almost sad (cheap furniture, barely any decoration).
The food was okay: nothing special, but good enough.
Frugal lunch for two (three dishes to share, bread and mineral water): ~€30.

Limited menu, great food and service

está OK

The staff is very nice (we had to wait five minutes for our table to be ready, and they invited us to a couple drinks). The menu is quite short -- just a few appetisers, sandwiches, burgers and desserts. Portions are generous (we did not order a dessert).

Fancy venue, regular food

está OK

The place is nice and elegant, and the staff was attentive to us (if also a bit absent-minded: waiters in training seemed a bit confused about what to do, a cup of coffee sat on a counter for a few minutes before my eyes before it was delivered to us, and we asked for a receipt that never arrived).

The food is nothing special. We ordered a quiche, lasagna, tuna and avocado tartare, and a dessert. Hot dishes were clearly re-heated... but not quite -- food didn't stay warm for long, and the plates themselves weren't hot. Also, one could feel the slightly stale colour and taste of not-fresh pastry crust, and notice that the avocado had suffered a bit of oxidation already.

Food was tasty and well presented, though. It's just that slightly disappointing feeling of eating something that is not fresh, or not hot enough.

Two beers, a salad, a "tosta", a dish of battered aubergine, and a dessert for two: ~€43.

Try the Oreo-flavoured dessert they have (see attached photo); very yummy home-made warm chocolate, plus Oreo ice cream.

Decent poke

está OK

Acceptable and affordable poke dishes. They can be ordered from the menu, or made custom to suit your preferences. Only vegetarian/vegan "protein" option is tofu (the others are tuna, salmon or chicken). They come in two sizes: "medium" and "large". We went for "medium" and found those filling enough.

The place is tiny (three small tables, plus a few tall stools facing the wall), so it can only accomodate groups of max. four people.

OK-ish

está OK

We sat at the bar along one of the walls, and ordered chicken and vegetable gyozas (5), small tuna maki-sushi (6), cold noodles with some tempura, and tap water. The menu is somewhat limited. The food we ate was acceptable, but we got the impression that in warmer seasons, when one does not enjoy hot ramen so much, these places don't have much good to offer...

Inexpensive and convincing

está OK

(We went in Oct 2017)

Not bad. Similar to what one can get at a Japanese ramen bar, plus some "izakaya" dishes.

We ordered takoyaki, gyoza and ramen with truffle.

The takoyaki weren't great. The dough was more similar to Spanish "croquetas". Takoyaki is better in Hattori Hanzo ( 11870.com/pro/hattori-hanzo/tripu ).

The gyozas were good. A bit burnt... but then, that's how you often get them in Japan, anyway.

The ramen (the flagship dish) were good. Probably the best we've tasted in Madrid (which is not a huge compliment, anyway). The slice of pork is too thick, and the broth isn't as tasty as the real thing you get in Japan. But still good. The truffle touch, we did not get. It's a weird flavour in ramen. We would have ordered a "standard" ramen, but could not find any on the menu...

Total: 6 gyozas, 6 takoyaki, 2 small truffle ramen (100 g), one bottle of water, one can of shochu (alcoholic refreshment made with some fruit a bit of vodka). €26. Good value for the (low) price.
